Last year I had the chimney cleaned on our fireplace, as well as a new chimney cap put on to keep the squirrells out.

Finally got to fire it up last weeek for the first time and the living room quickly smelled like smoke.

I DID make sure the flue was open, and while smoke didn't come pouring out of the firelplace I did see wisps coming into the room.

What am I doing wrong?

Didya open a window(or door) to help induce a draft?

I've always cracked a window or door to get the fire drafting then close it once things are going well. This should work, especially if your house is sealed tight.

Mine got a little smoky last year, had to call a chimney sweep.  The wood I was burning was little bit of everything (cleared alot of brush on property,) and I had some creosote buildup.
