Why do I get more and more misty eyed watching these things, the older I get?

Last time I tried watching one of the televisied parades, Katie Couric was one of the hosts.
Haven't been back, since.

Even when I used to channel hop a few of the parades, the constant laughter of the hosts, and the touchy-feel-good-crap, would send me packing in a few minutes.
