I never even saw FMJ until AFTER Boot Camp.  (Was only 10 days from walking into the recruiters office to yellow footprints...)

I didn't get ANY of the jokes....

The Gomer Pyle remake was called Heartbreak Ridge with Clint Eastwood as Gunnery Sergeant Carter, Marsha Mason as Bunny, and Mario Van Peebles as Gomer Pyle.

No, it doesn't.
Not like a animal bone turning into a spaceship or anything.

Animal Mother's backstory is that he got caught stealing a car and was given the choice between prison or Vietnam.

Pyle wasn't a criminal; he was quite the opposite... likely a suburban, soft, overly protected soy-boy.

Animal Mother wasn't born-again hard; he was already that way.

Gomer Pyle started as a greasy mechanic on the Andy Griffith show. He was a country boy, most likely grew up hunting and making moonshine.

ETA: I seem to remember an Andy Griffith episode where Gomer was leaving to join the Marines and his cousin Goober took over the auto shop.

In this episode Goober goes to visit Private Pyle

I think you're missing the point. It's not that Pyle was a fuck up. It's that Pyle wanted everyone to think he was a fuck up. He didn't want to be there, and by doing what he did, was trying to get booted. They basically forced him to become a Marine, and then, he got orders to Infantry, and possibly Vietnam, Republic of.

His schtick backfired on him. Like a lot of the hippie shit you see from the 60s. Just another ploy to get out of serving.

I'd never considered this possibility, but it could certainly be what Kubrick had in mind.

I believe if there is any symbolic meaning with Pyle and Animal Mother is that they are actually reflections of Jokers personalities. Pyle represents the dumb innocence of his youth. Joker struggles to make it through boot camp and his transition into a soldier literally dragging Pyle along every step of the way. It is only when he turns on Pyle and leaves him behind he is successful. Ultimately resulting in the death of his innocence.

Animal Mother could represent the finality of that transition. Joker is forced into actual combat having not yet made to his final transition into a soldier. Hence the scene when he first meets Animal Mother. He only finally make his transition after he shoots the VC sniper at the end after Animal Mother tells him to waste her.

Damn. That gave me goosebumps so I believe you must be correct.

OP's theory has more holes than hue city building though.

What OP fails to realize is as Gunny Heartman bleeds out on the deck, the 2nd half of the movie is what he sees in his mind.

Duh

Pvt Pyle got broke.  Animal Mother was a frosty motherfucker, a cold-eyed minister of death, not some whiny ass fat body who couldn't hack the gear and went all bangy bangy splat, making a shitty mess some other poor fucking recruit had to mop up.

I don't think that's the case.  He was low IQ and couldn't handle what they demanded of him.  He finally snapped.

No.  He couldn't be.  He was blind the whole time.

In a rarely seen interview clip from 1996, Kubrick revealed that Pvt Pyle was in fact blind the entire time.
