| Have any of you had experience with XM Radio? I'm thinkin' about getting it for my truck (Chevy '01 1500) and any information is appreciated. |
|
Damn I missed this, I have XM and it is really nice for long car trips. I don't think it has lots of commercials. Way fewer than any broadcast radio. I usually listen to the rock and comdey channels. Sometimes I'll scan the whole gamut though. If you don't want to install an aftermarket deck the Delphi or Roady unit is probably the way to go. Tape adaptor or FM modulator. |
| No Flame intended here. But why would I pay for something that is free. This seems to me to be the same type of scam cable TV turned out to be. Remember there was not to be any commercials on cable. When satelite radio first started there was not to be any commercials either. Just wait it will be crawling with them in not time. |
|
Do they have stations that are also aired regularly (in other states). A morning show that I really enjoyed moved (back) to California and I can only listent to certain segments on the internet. I would probably subscribe if I knew I could catch that particular program. So, to shorten my question, are XM stations all strictly satellite broadcasts or do they also broadcast regular FM stations? |

Sirius is in deep financial trouble, they will be broke by 2005. They are losing money every month and have been for a while. This thread is about them.. www.superiorinvestor.net/postt102.html |
At 10$ a month (less than the price of ONE cd) I think it's just fine. I don't think it will be "crawling" with commercials anytime soon, and I don't think it will get as bad as the FM stations around here. Besides even if it does get that bad, the quality, selection, and range of XM will be worth the 10$. |
Seems like to me everyone in that thread thinks its a good investment. And only two licenses? Those odds seem in their favor. |

I chose XM over Sirius. Certain channels have DJ's, but I don't listen to those channels because it's usually hip hop or Y2K'ish pop music, and there are some commericals (mostly on channels that would have commerical breaks: Fox, ESPN, ABC Radio, etc.) I'm very happy with XM. Jay |

Well, to adress the cost issue. I drive for a living, and I find it to be well worth the $9.95 a month to get things like Fox News, and the weather channel. I also spend a lot of time gold mining up in the mountains, and some places I can't even get an AM or FM signal. The Music channels are all going commercial free in March. Aviator |

Quoted: XM has lots of comercials, get Sirius. WTF What Commercials? XM is Excellent [:D] XM has developed a newer component system to add to your existing factory head unit if you do not wish to remove it, works the same way as the RF CD add-on changers. If money is not an object, go with ALPINE's after-market head units that are XM ready. |

Quoted: Just thought I'd bump this one back up. I'm thinking about getting XM for my truck and want to get some feedback from you guys that have had it for a while. Pete, I have a Delphi SkyFi in my 4Runner, but I would highly recommend you get the Delphi "Roadie" unit. Very easy to move from car to car, and almost half the cost of the SkyFi. Be sure to get the FM modulator (better sound quality over the cassette adapter), and only 30 bucks more. Total should be about 150 for the modulator and Roadie unit. I'm thinking of this for my cruiser. It would go right next to my Kustom Eagle RADAR. [ROFL] Jay |

Quoted: I have SIRIUS in my truck, haven't listened to FM Radio since. Clarion Pro-Audio and Kenwood are still making head units with SIRIUS receivers. As for losing $$$, SIRIUS has the NFL contract which to me is pretty huge. Yeah that NFL contract is huge....Sirius paid the NFL about $630 million for it. At their current rate of subscriber growth they'll be able to pay that off....never. |

AZCOP, my head unit (Apline Alpine CDA-9830, CD-R MP3 player) is XM-ready and Alpine makes an XM receiver which can be operated by the head unit. Only problem is that it's $150 more than buying SkyFi or Roady, but I might be able to plug those into the AUX input on my head unit. I'd need to pull it out to check. |

Quoted: XM has lots of comercials, get Sirius. I have XM and have listened to it since late November of last year. I never did think that they had that many commercials, but as of March 1 they are going 100% commercial free. I do a lot of driving and XM has been really nice. I got it free for 90 days when I bought my Yukon and I just subscribed for a year. I cannot comment on Sirius, but I sure like XM. |

Quoted: XM has lots of comercials, get Sirius. WRONG. XM never had many commercials to start with and as of Feb. 1, 2004 the music channels are 100% commercial free. SIRIUS is in trouble financially, and is no better than XM as far as programming goes. I doubt that Sirius will ever be able to pay off what they paid for the NFL deal. I have XM in both my vehicles and it's totally worth the 10.00 bucks a month. (plus equipment) Go for it. I doubt you'll be disappointed. SG |

Even if Sirius folds they have one of only two licenses and they own three satellites versus XM's two. Sirius provides better coverage. There will always be somebody to step in and bail out/buy out Sirius since the market is so closed. I picked up my Sirius Streamer made by Brix with a car mount/FM modulator and a home stereo docking cradle and antennae for $179.95 shipped on eBay. Minus a $50 rebate and I paid $129.95 for the receiver and both mounting units - not a bad deal. Sound quality is excellent, probably because my car's antannae is part of my winshield so the modulator transmits maybe two feet before the signal is received... no statis or interference from local radio stations at all through the FM modulator. Hell, if Sirius folds up next year I'll have enjoyed it for a year, it dodn't cost too much for the equipment and I can switch to XM if need be. For now, I'm quite happy. |
| I got XM in December; the Commander to be exact, and it's been worth EVERY penny I spent. The sound quality is supurb and the only time i've dropped the signal is while I was stopped at a red light under an overpass. There were some commercials when I first got it, but I havn't heard any since. XM is definately worth it. |

All the more reason to just go with a FM modulated Roadie. It won't be tied to yor Alpine: You can take it car to car. it may not be as clean an install as one might like, but for 150 bucks, I'd find a way to make it work. Jay |
