Central Ohio is incredibly touristy assuming you are here to sample foreign meth and heroin or get human trafficked.

I've allocated 5-6 hours for SF-Yosemite
Then another 5-6hrs for Yosemite to somewhere like Bakersfield or whatever just to eat dinner and stay the night.
Then 5-6hrs to get to SD.  I'd prefer to drive inland to avoid the LA area as much as possible due to traffic.
SD to Vegas is another 5-6hrs.  Planning to leave around 8am to get there around 2pm
Vegas to Williams is about 4hrs but we will be leaving in the morning and going via the Hoover Dam and Lake Mead and taking our time
Williams to LA is about 7-8hrs

Is my math right?

Hey, what phone data plan are you on? See if you can borrow a phone while here, or purchase a cheap phone with an "unlimited" plan.

If you use Google Maps to route your itinerary, add 30min for contingencies, and of course factor in at least 1 rest stop every 4hrs for the missus.
I would allocate 7hrs solid for SD to Vegas, which would include a fuel/rest stop.
If you have a phone with a decent plan, using the live version of google maps will give you some traffic updates.

Let me know (email, my PM box is full) when you are coming over. Maybe I can hook you up with some free shit. You mates took great care of me and my team last time, and every other time I've been there.

Sounds like a nice trip man, welcome, if there is anything you want to do in Connecticut hit me up(shoot, lobster etc).

The coast of New England (north of NYC) is very nice but if you don't have time get it next time.

Absolutely eat at a Vegas buffet!  It's part of the experience.  There are also some famous chefs who have restaurants there, my coworkers have given mixed reviews, however.

Burgr, for example, is expensive and not that good, I've been told.

A great resource for all things Vegas is Vegas.com.

We will probably get an AT&T sim card in NYC.  Not too fussed about calls but just need data really.  Some Aussie forums have been saying go with AT&T for better middle of nowhere coverage and theres a 10gb plan for 30 days for about $50 or something.  We plan on using Google Maps and Waze while driving.

We already have booked tickets to a show at the Wynn and for about $5 more it included buffet at the Wynn, so we just paid the extra $5.  We are only there for 2 nights but want to hit up another buffet and I want to hit up Gordon Ramsay Burger for at least 1 lunch.

I have a few questions.
1.  Where can I shoot guns besides Vegas as a foreigner?  My mate that is getting married has a few guns but he's gonna be busy prepping for his wedding and he just has the usual lame Cali legal stuff.
Use the internet for places other than Vegas.

2.  We intend to stay for a night somewhere between Yosemite and SD about halfway.  We want to go through the Tioga Pass and leave Yosemite on the East, so was looking at staying at Barstow or Ridgecrest, but I don't know if they are crime infested shit holes.  Any recommendations?
Camp beside the road. America is the safest place in the world. Just watch out for Bigfoot.

3.  I saw some documentaries on White Castle.  Where is this famous castle of whiteness that sells burgers?
It's a chain, they are all over the place. Here's a secret: The best Chef's only work the 11PM-4AM shift. You have to go there during this time. If your waitress notices that you are inebriated she will let the Chef's know. The chef will create the ultimate culinary creation for you.

4.  Where do you recommend staying at for the Grand Canyon?  We have allocated 2 nights there.
5.  I hear Americans like to go over the speed limit alot.  How much should I speed by?  Will the police pull me over and shoot me?
Look for a vehicle with large chrome wheels and really loud music. It's an America symbol for tier one drivers. Just mimic their driving habits and you will be fine.

6.  How much do you tip valet parking people and stuff?  We don't tip here and I know you tip servers at restaurants 15-20% and cab drivers about 10% but otherwise I have no idea.
Tip Everyone 25-30% or ten dollars, whichever is greater. It's custom here to tip every single person who offers a good or service, yes this includes the cashier.

7.  What's the best place to buy alcohol?
Everywhere, it's more common than guns here.
8.  Whats the best place to buy more suitcases?  We intend to fly there with 1 suitcase each and fill up on stuff to bring back so will need 2 suitcases each on the way back.

If you have any advice then I'm all ears

Watch out.  I've only ever driven on the left hand side of the road and my rental car is fully insured with no excess.

Let me save you some heartache now: that Whitecastle is not a real Whitecastle, and the food there is really bad. Pro tip. Left , Right, middle of the road, leave the politics in your head. It's just a really weird time here and you don't need any abdication on vacation. You probably already realize this so just saying.

#1 many indoor gun ranges rent guns and some even rent full auto. Try and link up with a fellow ARFCOMer if you can and go to a private range.

#2 outside of my territory, sorry.

#3 You will either love or hate WC, but you will find them around NY for sure.

#4 Been there but stayed in Henderson near the strip.

#5 5-10 over should do it. The PoPo (that's what they like to be called) won't shoot you for speeding as long as you stop when they hit the lights, and argue in a strange accent while waiving your arms and putting your hands in your pockets a lot.

#6 I tip a couple bucks usually, more if the occasion calls for it. Just rent a Jaguar and don't tip, they'll be used to that.

#7 what was the question?

#8 Just find a decent department store.

Most of all, just enjoy yourself.

Actually....we’d appreciate it if you did spread your political opinion...since it aligns with what most west coast liberals believe Australians hate.

They think you don’t exist. A non-lib pro-gun Australian. No one will argue with you because you will use that amazing accent. Libs heads will explode because you aren’t supposed to exist according to them. Talk politics everywhere....you will never see these people again.

California traffic will be a whole different world.  Trying to leave within any major city around 8:00 in the morning will put you in a four or five lane parking lot.  Speeding will not be an issue as your speed may get up to 10 mph (16 kph) in the heavy traffic spots.

As mentioned above (especially in CA) try to keep with the flow and make sure that there is at least one car going faster than you.  Also, do not be the slowest car unless you are in the very right hand lane.  The CHP will pull you over for impeding traffic, which is just as bad as speeding.

I think your estimated travel times in CA are very optimistic. Though the posted speed limits may be 70 mph, you might find that in some places (a crash) that the speed will slow to a crawl.

Verizon will have better coverage than AT&T. In some of the rural areas you will have no service. Don't waste your time at Outback. The buffet at the RIO in Vegas is HUGE. If you can't find something edible there you are doing it wrong. Alcohol in Nevada can be bought 24/7 almost anywhere, bars/pubs can and do stay open around the clock.

This isn't a dig at you OP, as I understand the logistics. But every time I talk to a foreigner while traveling they always tell me they are coming to America and always mention only the biggest cities.

It's a damn shame really as I feel like the never even see 99% of what America is like.

You’re not spending enough time in parks and too much time in awful cities especially in Cali.

Also, tipping a waiter anything below 20% says “you did a poor job”. 25% says “wow that was great!”. 20% says “good job”. Don’t let troglodytes and octogenarians tell you any different.

AZ gun stores may do rentals as well as Vegas. Not sure about Cali it's been years since I lived there.

2.  We intend to stay for a night somewhere between Yosemite and SD about halfway.  We want to go through the Tioga Pass and leave Yosemite on the East, so was looking at staying at Barstow or Ridgecrest, but I don't know if they are crime infested shit holes.  Any recommendations?

Stayed and drove through Barstow many times when I was driving a truck many years ago. Not much there. Don't know about Ridgecrest but it has to be better than Barstow.

3.  I saw some documentaries on White Castle.  Where is this famous castle of whiteness that sells burgers?

I think they are gross, YMMV.

4.  Where do you recommend staying at for the Grand Canyon?  We have allocated 2 nights there.

I've only been to the North Rim on an off roading trip. It's incredible. On the south rim I've heard there is a hike you can do to the river and stay the night at a neat place on the water. Hike out the next day. I'm sure there are plenty of cool places to stay on the South Rim.

5.  I hear Americans like to go over the speed limit alot.  How much should I speed by?  Will the police pull me over and shoot me?

5 to 10 over is probably fine.

Lots of places sell it, if the area looks sketchy go elsewhere.

Dept store, Wal Mart, wherever.

I noticed you said you wanted to see LA just to see Hollywood Blvd. I lived there for a couple of years and worked jobs down there many times. If that's your only reason to see LA I wouldn't bother. Spend the extra day at the Grand Canyon.

Some random thoughts.

Don't count on driving everywhere. You have LOTS of time sitting in a car on an interstate scheduled. Do some driving route maps to make sure you aren't eating up more time than you want in a car. Also, some places you are driving will have complications if there is winter weather.

Alcohol is everywhere, unless you are in Utah. Grocery stores will get the "normal" stuff but otherwise any liquor store will have interesting things. For the best experience of culture, look at what the locals are drinking in the pubs. The USA has lots of small breweries now with something for everybody.

Speed at 5 over if you don't want a hassle. Go along with traffic. Lanes are generally on/off/slow (right), medium (center), and fast (left inner). You should pass a few trucks, but don't do much passing of cars.

Your ideas of tipping are adequate, especially if you are not returning to the place. Also, tipping the housekeeping staff at hotels 10 for cheap places, 20 for expensive will get you a little extra help should it come up. Tip the first day of cleaning and then not again after that. (This protects from theft, and sloppy work in the room.) I'd give a valet 10, but I don't ever use those services. The rule is generally, if someone is walking around arranging, getting, cleaning up after you, checking, or assisting you with things it's a tipped position. If they are standing at a register or computer it's optional.

Use google maps to find white castles when you get someplace. Don't get on an airplane 24 hours after you partake. Otherwise enjoy.

Target or Walmart stores will have decent suitcases for cheap. Consider shipping things back instead, if it's not food or taxable stuff like booze. Also, if you have never been in a Walmart, don't skip it. It's a cultural invention of Americans. ;)

If you are single, females will flock to you for the accent. At least outside the big cities they will.

Be polite and have fun and you won't have problems. We are a peaceful people, despite what the news idiots say.

You can legally shoot at any gun range.  Many have rentals.  Battlefield Vegas would be the best bang for a one time experience.  American Coney Island on Fremont street is a must have for authentic chilidogs.  Le Reve at the Wynn is an awesome show.

Speed limits in some places are strictly observed.  Other places not so much.  You don't know unless you live there and get used to it.  Speeding tickets are a big money maker in some small towns.  On the interstate I generally just go with the flow of traffic.

Buy suitcases on amazon and have them delivered to your hotel.

Speeding really depends on local conditions. 10 over is generally fine in California, and you’ll probably get passed frequently.

Barstow is a shithole. If you can afford the time take the PCH down from San Francisco and just enjoy the scenery.  It’ll take a lot longer but it’ll be a lot more enjoyable and the scenery will be a lot better.  And you can stop anywhere and be confident it’s not a shithole.

You are aware of the distances involved with driving out west?  Be careful, America doesn’t have signs all over imploring you to pull over every 45 minutes

You won’t find PCH on a map as such- California state highway 1, or Pacific Coast Highway.  Great view of the ocean, much slower going than 101 or I-5.

I advise that you skip New York.

That, and anything east of the Mississippi.

Why would you be afraid of getting a speeding ticket?  Just don't pay it.  They aren't going to come to Australia and extradite you for driving 32 in a 30.

Also, tipping a waiter anything below 20% says "you did a poor job". 25% says "wow that was great!". 20% says "good job". Don't let troglodytes and octogenarians tell you any different.

I spend 4 days a week on average in hotels, and eating at restaurants.
Tips are between 15-20% of the pre tax amount.

18% is very standard. Nobody is going to look at you sideways for a 18% tip. 32 years ago (when I started) the standard tip was 10%

Daytime plans are basically do touristy shit and do some shopping.  Aussies have a ton to do in NYC since it's so different to anything here and shopping is way better than here.  Unfortunately we probably won't be able to spend much/any time outside of NY

Pocono Pistol sucks. If you hike out here PM me. I can bring two guests to my range.

There are a bunch of White Castles on the way

We already have booked tickets to a show at the Wynn and for about $5 more it included buffet at the Wynn, so we just paid the extra $5.  We are only there for 2 nights but want to hit up another buffet and I want to hit up Gordon Ramsay Burger for at least 1 lunch.

Cancel tickets to the WYNN and goto the Baccannal Buffet.  Here's why:

It’s not that way anymore. They’re taking 18% as a message.

Please add these to your itinerary.  You'll thank me later.

http://parks.nv.gov/parks/valley-of-fire

https://utah.com/zion-national-park

Valley of Fire is really kind of cool because a LOT of popular US movies and TV shows were shot there.  Some areas are even marked what was filmed in that location, and if you go back and watch the movie or TV show, it will shock you how tight the area is between canyon walls, and how large it looked on camera.

Zion because one will realize there is a God.  Most beautiful place I have ever been in my life.

Also, find the Grand Canyon tour that flies down into the canyon with the helicopters.  It was the ride of my life when the pilot dipped the nose down at the rim and we went down into the canyon.  Breath taking! This is Indian Reservation land though, not National Parks lands.  Observe Reservation Laws that are posted.  They are a separate Nation than the USA.

Just a suggestion. Trim a day or 2 off of your NYC time and hop a train to DC.  Check out the monuments, museums, and Arlington National Cemetery.

Also, keep in mind that alcohol laws can vary by state. Some states only sell through state authorized stores, in some states you can buy it at any store. I believe NY and CA are free states though.

Pretty much. Grocery stores and quick stops sell beer but not liquor. Liquor stores sell liquor and wine, but not beer.

Also, but a Yuengling when in NYC. It's America's oldest brewery and you can't buy it anywhere but the east coast.

Be judicious with the pejorative "cunt."  It's a more offensive word in the States.

1) White Castle is OK, but you REALLY want to try In & Out Burger in Las Vegas and all over the west.

2) speeding:  if you end up driving anywhere in the desolate South West, be aware:

- there are small towns which literally fund themselves largely with speeding fines extracted from tourists (ask me how I know ).

Seriously, you will find yourself cruising across the dessert at 70 and suddenly a town will appear - with a sign saying "SPEED LIMIT 25 MPH".

A blink of an eye after you notice the sign, a town police car will be one your tail, and you have to pay - on the spot (or go to jail).

You have been warned.

Thanks for the offer, but when travelling with the wife unit, I gotta tick off the tourist boxes.  Central Ohio doesn't seem very touristy

as far as i know , i dont think there are any white castles in Manhattan NYC, which is where i guess you'll be.  You'd have to travel into brooklyn, queens, long island, or NJ, or upstate NY

edit: correction there looks to be one up near harlem, but its an area i dont think tourists ussually go to
