"Uncontrolled Impact With Terrain"

Lynyrd Skynyrd's plane goes down, killing six
The band's chartered plane runs out of fuel due to a faulty engine and crashes in Mississippi. Singer Ronnie Van Zant, guitarist Steve Gaines, and backup singer Cassie Gaines are killed, along with three crew members. Lynyrd Skynyrd would disband after the accident, with the remaining members reuniting a decade later.

"Lyn-yerd Skyn-yerd"  I will never forget Walter Cronkite announcing that story.  I hope he's still roasting in hell, that scumbag fuck.

This is one of my favorites. Usually when people think of Skynyrd they think of that God awful song Gimme 3 Steps or the way overplayed Freebird or Sweet Home Alabama.

I think you have the wrong plane OP.  The one in your post is the one that Patsy Kline died in.

This was the plane that Ronnie Van Zant was on...

Having been a teen then, I got pretty burned out on their most popular stuff, but in the last few years have gotten re-acquainted.  Listening to Freebird of all things this morning and have come to appreciate it as a truly awesome song with incredible guitar - overplayed or not.

I remember the day too.  I've hated Freebird since the first time l heard it.  Although it's use in Forrest Gump is spot on! It's the only time l can tolerate the damned thing.

Probably my favorite song;

I had my ticket stubs that I slit a wee bit to sneak in an unopened "Street Survivors" album, which, when first released, had the band standing in front of a flaming street, and Steve Gaines, being toe-headed, look like he was on fire.  After the crash, these were pulled from record stores, and a new jacket was released with the fire cropped out.

Sadly, I had a girlfriend that donated a bunch of my stuff while I was out of town, "just trying to make a path, and you don't even have a record player"....

I was on the scene that night (early morning) covering it
for a New Orleans TV station.  Ambulance crew was bringing out the last bodies when we arrived. Pitch dark in a wooded area near a levee. The only light was from the portable belt light we
were carrying for the video camera.
Plane looked relatively intact, but was split open about mid point.
No fire.
Luggage and personal items strewn about.

Anyone ever hear Howard Stern's interview with Artimus about the crash?

Supposedly he was crawling out of the forest, all bloody, to a farmhouse, and a farmer shot him in the shoulder thinking he was a psycho.

I guess the farmer denies shooting him...

OP's plane is neither LS nor Patsy Cline.  Maybe Croce's but I dunno.

I was in college and heard about on the news the next morning.  Met some friends on my way to class.  We decided the best tribute was to skip class and drink whiskey all day.

While Artimus is one weird dude, he was always nice to me. Have to agree with the question, though. What did he do?

From what I undertand, the pilots died from the impact to the front of the plane, Steve had massive internal injuries and was alive when he was pulled from the plane but died on scene.  Ronnie was hit in the head by something and killed.  Cassie I'm not sure about.  The only one ejected was Ronnies friend that always toured with them, and he supposedly smacked into s tree and got burned by something but he lived.

One of the said in an interview that they had a lot of cases and things that normally wouldn't have been on a plane that were unsecured so when it crashed all of shit went flying into everyone.

Lynard Skynard was headed for Baton Rouge, LA then to Little Rock, AR, then on to Evansville, IN to play Roberts Stadium two nights later.

I have 2 tickets for the Evansville concert, which now live inside the shrink wrap on a first release copy of the Street Survivor album. The first release had a cover photo with fire around the members. It was pulled the day of the crash and replaced with a photo of the band standing in front of a black background.

Sad day indeed. I was in high school. My brother was in college at GA Southern and had just seen them the week before, and had worked the show with some other guys and girls in the student union.

RIP.
