Temple of Doom scared the ever living crap out of my 7yo FYI. She was fine until the human sacrifice scene.
Wife still gives me crap for that. I'm at that awkward age where I saw these movies as a kid...but often times it was on broadcast TV with the worst parts censored out. Now that I have my own, I can watch them with my kids, but only in all their glory. Great example: Back to the Future. I loved that movie as a kid, but I don't want my young kids watching Biff try to rape McFly's mom in 1955. I could stop it and make them leave of course, but it's not worth it IMO. |

Flight of the Navigator scared the crap out of me as a kid.
On the other hand, Temple of Doom never bothered me. Goes to show you never can tell what a kid will react to. |

I have a 6 year old and have been watching "older" movies with him, a lot have already been mentioned.
Wizard of Oz Pee Wee's Big Adventure Beetlejuice Who Framed Roger Rabbit Star Wasrs original trilogy Princess Bride Gremlins Goonies ET Iron Giant Never Ending Story Weirdly he also cracks up laughing at clips of the Carol Burnet Show on YouTube. |

Jumanji. RIP Robin Williams. Club Paradise is good for kids with a few pot references to navigate as a parent. Only issue.
Willow. "You are a great Swordsman" Indiana Jones: The Last Crusade, except the one face-melting scene at the end. I loved Star Wars as a kid, but Aunt Beru and Uncle Owen's charred skeletons still haunt me. Jurassic Park, I guess. I read the book before the movie was made. I was disappointed by the movie. Kids will probably like it. |

Most of the movie listed (Flight of the Navigator, Neverending Story I (not II), Dark Crystal, Labyrinth) are all good.
H2O Just Add Water is a good series for girls, too. Set in Australia, Queensland/surfer's paradise... it was really enjoyable to hear funny sounding English and see the background scenery. |

I know you said no animated films, but The Secret of NIMH (1982) is a classic adventure kids movie, and a little scary.
The Last Starfighter (1984) is a good live action sci-fi adventure. |

In the US it was called "The Quest" but the original Australian title was "Frog Dreaming." Great adventure film, as far as I remember seeing it as a kid. Some kid goes investigating a mythical swamp monster in the Australian outback.
"The Explorers" was another great one. Kids get weird dreams, and use information from the dreams to build a spaceship. Galaxy Quest was pretty funny, but not sure if kids would like it if they didn't grow up with Star Trek. The Princess Bride is an amazing adventure film. Lots of fun for kids and adults both. Swashbuckling violence. Outlander was a pretty cool "viking from space" movie. Kid-safe. Spaceship crashes in ancient Norway, and space-man joins a local tribe of vikings... but an alien monster tagged along and now they're all fighting for their lives. And he makes a badass sword from alien metal from his crashed spaceship. Disney's The Black Hole was pretty good. Spaceship about to be sucked into a black hole is rescued by a reclusive scientist who lives alone on a space station orbiting a black hole. Hilarity ensues.
