| Thinking about my options for my latest PDW build....wondering what folks think about trijicon reflex sights like the 42mm. |

I suggest you check out the Meprolight M21, best reflex sight currently available (IMHO, especially w/the triangle reticle).
It's less expensive, comes w/a decent QD mount and (most importantly to me) the reticle doesn't bloom/distort in bright sunlight like it does w/Trijicons. Tomac |

| I had an M21 on my Tavor for awhile and really liked it. Unfortunately I got the bullseye reticle which manages to look like the best on paper while being fucking worthless in actual use. If I had gotten the dot, or preferably triangle, I'd likely still be using it. |

I used to use the Trijicon Reflex II sight well after they ceased to be cool (on my duty weapons). Â Â Does that count? Â |

Ok, that sucks. I passed on an M21 because I heard it DID bloom. Quoted:

so how do they handle transition from dark to light? If you're talking aiming from, say, a dark room out a window into bright sunlight, then you will encounter a certain amount of reticle washout. That can be anything from minor washout to total washout depending upon the optic (M21 seemed the most resistant, but not immune, to washout) and the ambient light conditions. During my own tests I could get the M21's triangle reticle to get very dim, but not wash out completely. Tomac |

Thinking about my options for my latest PDW build....wondering what folks think about trijicon reflex sights like the 42mm. I have been using Reflex sights for a long, long time now and several different models. IMO, they are the sight most people should buy from Trijicon but I have to say that from a light gathering standpoint the 42 mm models (RX34 etc.) are a significant step up on the earlier Reflex 2's. The RMR's are the brightest in terms of light gathering, I have one on my shoulder braced Glock on a 6 Second mount. You want to be careful buying them with a green reticle though, they put darker lens coating on them for better contrast and it is dark enough to not be able to be seen thru in the early evening hours. Not a huge problem as you are supposed to use both eyes open with them but understand the green reticle will functionally be like Occluded Eye Gunsights like the vietnam era Armson OEG's. All that said..... Trijicon doesn't want to replace Tritium in these when they go dim and has a policy stating such. My experience is that they will do it but it is not cost effective. Meprolight has their rather excellent M21's that are a functional equivalent to the 42mm Reflex sights and they can and will upgrade and update the Tritium when it is time. I've had both and other than really liking Trijicon products and living close and knowing some of their staff I can't think of a reason not to buy the Mepro-21 over a Reflex. One last bit,.... If you are building a nice PDW and are ready to invest in a nice sight, consider stepping up a bit money-wise and look at either a TA-44SG ACOG or one of the 2x models. They have a dot/ring reticle intended for subgun use that is sized for man sized torsos, so if you have half of a torso in the ring you will get a hit somewhere on a target no matter what. The optics and reticle are much better than a Reflex and the light gathering is better too. I'd definitely go for the ACOG if having a green reticle is important. Definitely skip the red.... too hard to see in low light. Amber is best for that. |
