I was watching a show on flight 800 and remembered it being all over the news when it happened. I was 8 years old and fascinated by planes but I didn't understand a lot of it at the time. I know there are a ton of conspiracy theories regarding a possible missile or bomb and even differing opinions with the FBI and NTSB investigations. The final report concluded it was likely a short circuit ignited fuel vapor in the center fuel tank.
It's amazing they recovered all the bodies and 95% of the 747. I understand it's still assembled and used for NTSB training. I know there are a lot of aircraft junkies on here, what do you guys think happened?

Seems like we have this TWA 800 "argument thread" a few times a year.
I will post here what I've posted in every other one (that I'm aware of) so far: - In the early hours after the crash, there was a NY ANG helicopter pilot (UH1 Iroquois) who was interviewed as stating he saw a plume of flame and a smoke contrail tracking UP from Long Island Sound, towards the departure corridor from JFK that 800 was transiting at the time. - He was a Vietnam veteran and trained/familiar with the visual effects of MANPADS. - About 24 hours later, it was like someone flipped a switch, and he vanished from all (or nearly all) MSM reporting. - I still wonder to this day if a terrorist cell fired something like an SA-7 shoulder fired IR guided SAM from a small watercraft on the Sound. I'm not saying I believe it one way or the other, but I'm saying I wonder about it, and I wonder if Team Clinton slammed a lid of secrecy on the affair so as not to alarm the public. This will be my first and last post ITT. I have no intention to enter into any arguments, nor will I. Have a good night. ETA: Correction to "Long Island Sound."
