I've been given an initial diagnosis and I'm waiting on a referral to an ENT specialist. The diagnosis might be wrong and that's my hope because I really don't want surgery. I like my hearing.

According to the literature the doctor gave me cholesteatoma is a non-cancerous destructive growth in the ear that left untreated can seriously mess things up inside the head. It has to be cut out but since the ear is a complicated mechanism and cholesteatoma has to be removed completely, It's possible in order to remove the growth the surgeon will also have to remove the vital parts of the ear.

Anyone have experience? What am I in for if the diagnosis is confirmed?

If it's small they can watch it.

If it's big and infiltrative they'll have to do a few surgeries to take it out. It's hard to get all of one of those out
