No not the big arf discussion/debate 9v45. Just one particular comparison.  The S&W Shield. The 9 holds only one more round and is almost the same size overall.  We are only talking about the Shield if you were going to CCW one.  I am sure there are quite a few here with a Shield or two since the big rebate.
So which do you pick.

10mm needs to be an option to interest me.

I voted for .45 because I carry a full-size 1911.

For the shield I would go with 9mm. It's a small gun and harder to shoot so I'd want an extra round a d I will be more manageable.

I don't think anyone has made a Shield in 10mm. Only a matter of time in arfland.

9 for recoil in such a light gun.

Honestly, 40. Bought b/c of rebate. Much easier to shoot than my G27 was.

Did you choose it over 9 or 45, or was it all that was available?  I could not see an advantage to the 40 in this case since it has same capacity as 45 and one less than the 9.

9mm.  Cost per round, recoil, and common ammo with the universal answer:  G19.

I went 45acp for the Shield since it's about the same mag capacity, might as well go with the larger round. It's a better gun compared to the 9mm version also, better trigger, better grip. Of course then again that rough grip texture isn't the best against bare skin. So if you plan on carrying it under just a T-shirt, then the 9mm might be better with it's smoother grips. Or you can take some sandpaper to the 45's grips to knock down some of that aggressive texture.

9mm.
Cheaper to shoot.
Higher capacity.
If on target, then equal stopping power.

All things being equal between a 9mm and a .45acp, I'll take the 12gauge every time.

I've got a Shield 9, but if I had it to do over again, I think I'd go with the 45. With most of the places I go, I'm even comfortable with the capacity of a J-frame, so the capacity of the 45 would be plenty for me.

I've never shot the 45, but the people I know who have them say that the recoil difference is negligible and the way the 45 feels in-hand is much superior and negates any perceived recoil difference, anyway. Haven't ever heard anyone say that they wish they had the 9 instead.

Additionally, if you really think that the capacity difference is going to be an issue for you in the places you go, you probably need to be looking at something other than a single-stack, anyway. Bottom line, though - either one is a good choice.

The rebate drew me in. I know it is a good pistol and I was already thinking on a 43 to replace my 27... So I got the 9mm for work. Then the price was still too good so I got the 45 because I like 45...

So now I've carried both at 4 iwb. The stippling is different. There is more stippling on the 45 and it is chafing my back. I guess I can fix it but it is sharp. And the 45 is slightly larger. Recoil seems about the same. 9mm was shooting way left out of the box, the 45 was right on.

BOTH!  Always get both.

I got a Shield in each caliber.

9mm for summer carry and .45 ACP for winter when bad guys will most likely be wearing a heavy coat.

From a practice perspective. 9mm is real good. More trigger time for the same price.

45 out of a short barrel leads to sub-optimal terminal performance. That is, of course, just my opinion.

This (Shield 9mm w/MagGuts +2 is my primary EDC). No provable effectiveness advantage for the .45 over 9mm (and all handguns are relatively poor 'stoppers' regardless of caliber or bullet used) so I'll take more 'poor stoppers' over fewer 'poor stoppers'.

The .45 is a bit larger and heavier than the 9mm.

That may be a good thing for shooting, but not for carrying.

I did the same. I have two single stack 9mms, a Kahr and a Ruger, and didn't need another.
The Shield 45 was a great deal. A safety is something that can't be added later if one is wanted.

For duty use where penetrating barriers will be a larger concern. 9x19.
For self defense, .45ACP so long as it's not smaller than a compact. If you want a carry piece that's sub compact or micro in size, go back to 9x19.

I believe .45acp is superior in regards to barrier penetration as far as vehicles are concerned.

I still carry 9mm.

Are we talking modern HP or ball? I take 45 ball over 9mm ball. Carry a 9mm w HP over a 45 with hp. Locked into a 10rd magazine, 45.

45ACP because short, fat, and slow can still get shit done.

9mm may kill you....But, 45ACP? 45ACP will kill your soul.
