I haven't watched it in years, pretty poor score on rotten tomatoes. Other than the petty shitbirds being super Delta Force Gunsite trained ninjas it's a decent movie I didn't know the girl was James Caan's daughter until arfcom told me.
The slow chase in the alley is decent. The clean cut bodyguards in suits instead of bearded tactical timmys looks dated. Lots of dinosaur guns, pump shotguns, 1911s, Whatever 308 Del Toro has. Phillipe not killing the two guards when he has them dead nuts is interesting |
|
I always just assumed they were both ex-infantry types who knew how to handle themselves, and probably got discharged for doing something bad.
It was a good movie, in a time where most gun handling in films was complete garbage. Â All-star cast of actors that I like as well. |

Phillipe not killing the two guards when he has them dead nuts is interesting Let's see. 1) You're not very observant for a lawyer 2) the chase was smart, good way to have an advantage without losing sight of your enemies. 3) Most rich mafia guys would bodyguards who didn't draw a lot of attention in the environment they were mostly in. Since their boss took on the guise of a legitimate business man, guys in suits makes sense. 4) The old bag men used old men guns. 5) Killing 2 bodyguards would have brought in more heat. They were trying to get the money without getting their faces plastered everywhere and teams of men hunting them, which is what happened anyways. |

My vote.

It's really hard not to get drawn into a film with an opening scene like that.Â
|

I always read the directors brother was a SEAL that helped train them.
If you look at it like a modern spaghetti western I love it. Having them use 1911s as the classic gunfighter pistol was smart. I always saw them as ex military. It fun in a conversation someone asks me about myself and I say 'I never killed a man.' Then I try to finish it with 'You should.' |

But did you know that she is the other guy's (Dude from Any Which Way But Loose) daughter in real life? http://i4.mirror.co.uk/incoming/article5477553.ece/ALTERNATES/s615/MAIN-Geoffrey-Lewis-father-of-Juliette-dies.jpg https://media.tenor.com/images/e795d3bfaa35b8843bf27b83e65a111d/tenor.gif |

The opening scene was Awesome, and it went downhill from there.
The part where he cut himself on glass and acted like it was the worst agony ever. ![]() . That would have ruined the movie, except it already sucked.
You don't feel it when it's unexpected. Especially, when you're hopped up on adrenaline. Second worse Arfcom recommendation, ever. |

I love it. The psych eval scene for sperm donation is pure comedy gold.
Shoot outs are outstanding for the late 90's early 2000's. Good plot. Good writing. Great acting. 9mm 1911's with lots of reloads and Ryan Phillepe diving into that fountain with smashed bottles was a genius idea. |
|
I watched it on the advice of the last such thread in GD.
I enjoyed it, that said the opening kind of set an impossibly high bar for the rest of the film. Those bodyguards really, really fucking sucked at their job. And I could have done with a lot less talking about the dreaded Baltimore Noodle Incident. |

I think I reading somewhere the back story on them was they were former rangers who had worked as contract killers but had screwed up a big job. Not too far fetched for criminals to have prior military backgrounds and enough of an interest in guns to have actually practiced a lot with them. I remember reading an FBI report that said on average cop killers had spent more time practicing with their firearms then the officers they killed. A surprising percentage had done things like practicing shooting at moving targets and shooting on the move. They knew for sure that sooner or later they were going to be shooting at real people so they made an effort to prepare themselves. Different mindset then most cops or gun owners who train thinking that someday they might need that training.
Kind of remind me of Platt and Matix from the Miami FBI shootout. Platt who was the one who did most of the shooting supposedly went through thousands of rounds on a regular basis practicing. |

Interdasting. I always heard that either one of the actors brothers or the directors brother was a SEAL and that's where they learned gun handling. After I heard it from the class, I went to rewatch the shootout and sure enough, the way Benicio Del Toro works his single handed malfunctions and reloads is the way that Uncle Scotty teaches it in the class. |
