[ARCHIVED THREAD] - I hate Microsoft (Page 1 of 3)

Yet again I'm getting boned by another fucking bullshit mandatory Windows 10 update, because you know, turning the fucking things off means jack shit, it will just fucking do it anyway. I have spent the last 20 minutes staring at a blue screen which claims that the updates are 100% ready and not to turn off the computer. It has done this before, it takes fucking hours to complete. In the meantime I have a major paper due at midnight, but fuck me, Windows must install random weekly Facebook (or other shit that I don't use or want) security update 8458484695864584864584584. Because you know having the latest useless fucking patch is so instantly and critically important that everything else, no matter how important, must fucking wait.
Fuck Microsoft. Seriously, how long can it be at 100% before it will finally let me use my ficking computer? It has been like this since 5:00 o'clock. Edit: correction, it has now magically gone from 100% to 24%. Wonderful. |

I read things like this and wonder if I'm living in a dream world. Is this part of some generational Linux propaganda campaign?
I've never had Windows install or download and update when it's set not to, and I can't imagine why anyone would use an OS that did what it wanted and ignored your settings. If this is actually happening, why haven't you installed a different OS or put Windows 7/8.1 on your computer? |

According to "certain people" if you don't allow Win10 to update when and where it wants to, you're using your computer wrong. *They* have never had it misbehave.
Which version of Virus10 are you running? Creator, Pro and Enterprise have options to let you define active hours, and updates won't be applied during that time. Maybe. (You can't create an active period longer than 18 hours, though.) Home? That's what you get for using a 'free' upgrade - no options for you! (Well, unless you're MSCE certified and can run Group Policy settings from memory.) ((What? You're not? Pickup that can, Citizen. MS knows what's good for you!)) |
|
In b4 Josh or some other Win10 guru tells you it must be something YOU are doing wrong, not the OS.
Wife has Win10, I have MBP, we flipped all the secret switches to have Win10 on her compiter NOT do this, yet it still does. I do not care how great it is under the hood, the user interface blows and the user experience blows. Buy a Mac. |

I'm using the 'free' W10 home upgrade and I can set the active hours. Attached File |
| Downgrade back to Win7 and download GWX Control Panel once you're done with your paper. |

Not true. I'm using the 'free' W10 home upgrade and I can set the active hours. https://www.AR15.Com/media/mediaFiles/20962/Capture-252443.JPG I'll update my knowledge base, accordingly. |

I don't want to sound like "That Guy", but you would probably enjoy MacOS a lot more.Â
Problem is, you gotta open your wallet wide to (legally) run it on supported hardware. But...you'd probably like it more. Food for thought in case you start looking at used ones on Craigslist. I'm done arguing with people over Win 10, and I'm done trying to patiently explain how to make it behave the way you want it to. I come here to relax, not troubleshoot people's dumb computer problems like I'm at work. You have the choice to use something else. Take advantage of it. |

Use this all the time after a fresh install and update.
DoNotSpy for Windows 10 There is also a registry hack to disable (auto) updates on metered connections, and you can set ALL your connections to be this way if you so choose. |

Does Microsoft test their shit at length with real people and not just avid computer techie people?
Apple has their shit right: consumer products should not be about geeking out on the finer points of the technology, it is about providing a superior consumer experience. |

Wonderful. I knew what this rant would be about the minute I saw the topic. MS Update is broken as hell, using all available bandwidth and basically locking out your internet while it pulls gigs of data. It's absolutely intolerable, it's a known problem, and MS does nothing. No ability to pause, no ability to restrict bandwidth or hours. It's unacceptable. |

But yeah, it's kind of a pain. There are hacks out there to give you a bit more control over it (short of running your own WSUS server), but you'll need to spend some time Googling around or pretending to be IT. |

As a programmer, it infuriates me that they refuse to simply put an option in the Updates settings to make it behave. There is no reason other than typical MS bullheadedness not to do it. It's as stupid as the push for the ribbon interface. |

You can't have both - either let Win10 do it's thing and it works amazingly well *OR* try to control everything it does.
The people who do NOT have Win10 problems seem to be the ones who leave it the hell alone (just like MacOS) and the ones who hate Win10 seem to be the ones who try to make it update only the things they want when they want. Numerous postings here and around the web about setting active hours, etc. I've got Win10 on everything from fairly "real" computers (big CPU, big memory) to netbooks and tablets - and none of them behave like the OP's machine. That's 'cuz I let them do their thing and then amazingly they're not trying to do it when I'm trying to work. |

Wrong. It's 100% Microsofts fault. They have been in business what, almost 30 years, and have not found a way to program an OS without 87 million critical flaws. They should make a better product, not force me to babysit their fucking garbage. I just looked it up, founded in 1975, so 42 years and this is their flagship product we are talking about. Why are their failures ok with you? I would not bitch is their os was free, but it's quite the opposite. This shit is not acceptable. |
