Got tired of my slow ass iPad 2 and ordered an Amazon Fire 8 HD on Prime day. My iPad can currently barely surf arfcom, most other sites including Amazon are so slow and freeze so often it was driving me nuts. I only surf the web and watch a YouTube video here and there on my tablet, no games or other apps. Will I like the Fire ok or does it suck? I'm a little worried since it was so much cheaper than an iPad, but I figure if it sucks I can return it.
So who has one of these and are they worth a dam for just surfing the web? |

My ASUS Transformer tablet finally got too old to use, so I bought the Fire HD 8 a few months ago.
For the price, it's amazing. And you aren't limited to Amazon app stuff only. You can download and install files that let you use regular android apps. Easy to do and takes about 10 minutes. |

Why don't they put a GPS chip in these? 'd love to buy one to use only for off-line navigation in the car. Is a GPS chip a very expensive component? You need enough storage to be able to download maps like this so you need an SD card slot. This sub-$100 tablet has GPS and is on Amazon. 10". Same price as the "with special offers" Fire 8 (lock screen ads). The Fire is probably a nicer tablet but it won't do what you want. I just use my Nexus 6 in the car. I'm on Google's Project Fi and I rarely use my 4 gigs. |

My local gun club uses the Fire HD tablets for electronic scoring and those things have been through hell. Dropped, dusty, cold, hot, wet. Even one that someone dropped on a rock and cracked the glass. It's still running.
It's amazing to me that you can get something functional, feature-rich and tough like that for just a little more than a tank of gas. |
