I have an Amana top loading washer, it's over 25 years old, and it's been a workhorse.  Great old machine, bought it new.  I've noticed lately that there are a couple of oil dribbles in the bottom of the tub, running out from under the agitator.  This is after the washer's sat idle for a few days.  I assume I have a bad shaft seal at the least.  I hate to get rid of the machine, I think it runs circles around more recent washers.  What am I in for?  How is the agitator removed for a better look?

Sure it's oil and not rust?

Trying to save a 25 year old washer with lots of use on it is like trying to save a 30 year old car. And by car I mean something with absolutely no collector interest like a Yugo.

It is likely mostly done and you beat the odds and got your moneys worth . You can try to patch it together
but parts could be tough and with rust and corrosion you will break parts every time to try to take stuff apart

It's oil, I ran my finger through it.  I'd still like to save the machine if possible.  I've heard too many horror stories about modern appliances.

I'd love to see a picture of the "guts" of the machine with the front panel removed if possible, or at least a model number/serial number.

There is a chance I may be pretty familiar with this machine if it's one we made when we were affiliated with Amana.

Buy a speed queen and worry about it 25 years from now.
