[ARCHIVED THREAD] - In need of a string trimmer (Page 1 of 2)

| Anybody recommend a string trimmer? Kind of heavy use but not pro level. |
|
Several companies now make models with the ability to swap out the toolhead. Mine is a craftsman I got off Craigslist. I got some ryobi heads for it, a reciprocating hedge trimmer, an Edger, and a pole saw. It changes over In 15 seconds. It takes gas, not mix.
Saves space and there's only one cold start, after that swap the head out and it starts right up. |
| Around the house doing yard work? Or heavy clearing of thick weeds and brush after shredding? Around the house I use a Stihl FS90R, but if buying today would look heavily at the M18 cordless trimmer. Heavy weed/brush trimming a Stihl FS130 at least. For heavy trimming you want handle bar controls. |

Stihl is the choice of pros, and is sold at Ace Hardware.
I just bought another string trimmer. I already had a bunch of universal attachments (blower, trimmer head, chainsaw, extension pole, hedge trimmer), so I went with the new top of the line Craftsman. It's a 4 cycle (no more gas-oil mix!), has an electric start (no more broken pull starts), and has a dual mode head that offers both bump feed and fixed line feed. The fixed line feed is really nice because it is economical, and much faster, easier, and more reliable than reloading a head or changing a head. Can use multiple line diameter sizes too, so I currently have .130 in it. When shopping, make sure you consider one with an easy feed head like this. I decided against a battery powered trimmer because batteries are heavy, may not last very long, batteries are expensive, and sometimes they don't hold a charge. |

I have this. It's awesome. If I didn't already have the Stihl, I'd buy the EGO 56v lithium trimmer. Quoted:

Stihl 110 or new equivalent model. If I didn't already have the Stihl, I'd buy the EGO 56v lithium trimmer. Love my Stihl 110R |

Another happy EGO owner. The trimmer model with "speed feed"
I can trim and edge over an acre and a half without swapping the battery (2.5 amp hour battery). This includes a pool, fencelines, flower beds, two driveways, etc. Best trimmer I have ever had. I too will never go back to gas It is extremely quiet, not heavy, feeds line perfectly, long runtime, plenty of power (will cut very thick stuff), variable speed with lots of control for delicate areas. Reloading line takes seconds. The Ego blower is just as impressive. |

I'm on 5 acres with multiple outbuildings, a long ass driveway, and backed up to brushy woods on two sides that is constantly needing to be beaten back into submission, so I put power tools through their paces. |

I bought the Milwaukee trimmer. I'm very pleased with it. I have been using one of the heads for years and it works and lasts longer enough for at least 2 trims of my yard before I need to replace line. Attached File |

I want the Milwaukee, but hate all bump feed. Will it take one of the universal heads? I have been using one of the heads for years and it works and lasts longer enough for at least 2 trims of my yard before I need to replace line. https://www.AR15.Com/media/mediaFiles/38726/image-238226.JPG |

I bought a Cub cadet 4 cycle straight shaft trimmer for 170ish bucks last spring. That thing cuts like a boss. It gets moderate use and has held up very well. I really hate mixing gas and I have too much brush for a electric model. |

Get one with a straight shaft, not curved. |
