Looking at something closer to size of a laptop but still handy as a tablet. With a keyboard.
For general purposes are there any better options? The Surface is pricey so was considering the previous years model. Any place with better pricing than most? |

I have a Surface Pro 3, been an awesome device. The previous model (pro 4) should serve you well and you can actually find some at good prices online via Amazon (typically) or even from the Microsoft store.
If you don't mind refurbished, you can get some Pro 4 devices at some rather heavy discounts. |

They're pretty good but you got it, they're spendy.
I am typing this on an original Surface Pro from 2012. I bought one for the wife for her birthday and one for me as well. She upgraded to a 4 and loves it too. It's heavy to use as a tablet for surfing but leverage you can plug in a USB hub and use external mouse and keyboard and plug in an external LCD. I used it for work, no problems. I despise the keyboard covers, cannot get used to them. It's the best mix & match between surfing toy and a machine you can actually work on I've used. Battery replacement is very difficult on the original so research that if you want to buy used. |
|
If you want a tablet that can be a laptop from time to time, get a Surface Pro 4. Not sure where you can get a solid deal though.
If you want a laptop that can be a tablet from time to time, get a Surface Book. I've tried to use my SP3 for work (and tried the 4) but it's just not that comfortable for me being on a laptop all day (emails, presentations, quotes, spreadsheets, etc). I had them order a Surface Book and I could not be happier with it. |
|
The faculty and staff where I work buy them all the time. I probably order 75-100 a year. Rarely see hardware issues on them. They are pricey but get the keyboard flap. They are far better than any tablet Dell, HP, or Lenovo make.
We usually buy the i5 8GB 256 or i7 16GB 512 |

I have a 4 pro for work. It is the best and most handy machine I've ever used. Edit: The note taking ability, the stylus, the keyboard, the flexibility and compact stance of the entire platform are amazing. |

The Surface is pricey so was considering the previous years model. Any place with better pricing than most? Had the Surface Pro 4 and it was a piece of crap. Slow, buggy, would sometimes not wake up, had trouble connecting with printers, etc. But not sure if it was just Windows 10 or the hardware itself. But everyone else in this thread loves theirs apparently, so maybe I'm unlucky. |

I've had one for the past 2 years. I like the versatility but, I travel to satellite sites a bunch & I'm a multiple monitor bitch...I have to have 2-3 monitors so those dongles add up, it's a good thing I'm not paying for them.
Aside from my smarmy comment, I really like the system. GTG, would do business again. |

I'm writing this on a Surface Book I picked up last October as a refurb. It's the lower end model, because I didn't need the horsepower. I like having a more "laptop-like" configuration when I have the keyboard attached, but it is handy as a tablet, should I ever need to pop the top off. I mostly do that when I'm taking a dump... e-pinching!
BTW, for people that need to take hand-written notes and need to have those notes on their computers... look at the Rocketbook Everlast. It's an actual notebook that uses synthetic paper, and when written on with Pilot Frixion pens, you can wipe the ink off with a damp cloth or napkin. They have an app that you can use on your phone to snap a picture of the page in the notebook and import it to Evernote, One Note, send it as email and a few other functions. I've been using the Everlast for a couple weeks, just for simple notes, not for any serious shit, and it works very well! |
| Have a 2 year old surface pro. Bought it for work but would up giving it to my wife and daughter. They both love it but it treated more as a laptop than a tablet. Maybe once every couple of months my wife takes it off the charger and sits on the couch with it. Even then, she still uses the keyboard and doesn't really use the touch screen that much. |

| I went with a Lenovo Yoga 14, it's laptop tablet hybrid with a 2gb dedicated graphics cars... Way cheaper then the comparable Surfce Pro and better built. |
|
I use mine all day long. I keep it in the docking station with 2 monitors and full keyboard and mouse as a desktop replacement and take it with me on the road. It's smaller than the average laptop and just as powerful.
Buy the wireless display adapter. You can plug the adapter in the back of any TV and turn it into your monitor. Its definitely a slick setup. |

I own a SP2 and use the SP4 at work. If you feel you need a tablet and a laptop, the SP fits the bill. The SP1 is NOT worth pursuing, the battery life sucked and the GPU is intel's first try at combining a "decent" gpu and processor on the same chip. It failed! The SP2 has better battery life, gpu and more efficient cpu.
The sp2 is not a bad tablet, but lacks in the laptop department. If you are going to be making documents (ppt presentations, word documents, excel spreadsheet, etc) the small screen can strain your eyes. The SP4 is the opposite, great as a laptop but a little too big to be used as a tablet. However, you can dock them and use external peripherals... One major drawback to the sp line, you can't upgrade anything...so get the ram and hdd size needed ahead of time. |

Like ever Apple product, ever? It's replaceable, you just have to know how to use tools. Quoted:

Glued together with epoxy, and you'll destroy it if you try to make repairs. We gave-up on them because of that.z OP: I work on the Surface program. Anything specific you want to know other than people's general opinions, post here or PM me. |

You're not alone. We have one (and only one) in the office that started having major issues. Computer quickly became unusable. Couldn't even troubleshoot it because it was taking so long to fully boot up. Got a warranty replacement in the other day, and it won't boot up beyond the UEFI and won't recognize the system disk to boot from a thumb drive. My Microsoft support contact has gone radio silent. ![]() |

We have repaired many! BTW I own 3.. they are decent.. they get the job done! Surface Laptop is another beast. Buy the config you want, buy a warranty if you feel the need, and forget about it. |
