[ARCHIVED THREAD] - Kindle Paperwhite - Who has one? (Page 1 of 2)

| My wife started a new job and she gets up very early and goes to sleep early. I like to read a little at night in bed, usually staying up a later than she does. My original kindle (still going strong) requires the use of a reading light which has been keeping her up. I've read the paperwhites are backlit. Does anybody have one and does the backlit function work well? |

Does it put off any kind of glow towards the periphery in the dark? I've never seen one in person. BTW, I'm still using my original kindle keyboard…I've probably read at least 100+ books on it. Great invention! |

I love mine. Its the perfect size and it easily stores in small places unlike a larger tablet. Mine easily fits easily in places like my shorts cargo pocket. One thing I like is when I have my paperwhite I stick to my reading whereas if I'm on one of my tablets I am easily distracted and find myself routinely getting pulled away to check GD. , not so much if on the kindle. It is the only tablet that works in all lighting conditions even under direct sunlight the text is outstanding. The battery is phenomenal. Anyone who likes to read should have one. Not sure if true but I've read reports that it is easier on the eyes and causes less eye strain as the light is directed on the text and not through the device facing outwards towards your eyes.
Fintie cases that could be found on amazon are great, durable and very inexpensive, so those are my prefered cases. |

I have a first gen Paperwhite I got in 2014 and it's still running. Mine lets you select the brightness level down very very low to the point that it's almost not there.
The newer ones I think are auto adjusting. The GF has one of these and it's brighter than mine is which I don't particularly like. I don't know if there is an option to turn it down lower because I haven't really bothered to play with her Paperwhite. |

I love my paper white. Its perfect for what your needing it to do. Theres a huge amount of brightness adjustment and theres no glare if your outside in the sun. You can also turn it way down in the dark.
Fun fact. It is not "back lit" like a cell phone or laptop.. The light is directed towards the screen, not out of the screen. The light given off is more of a glow. The front light design dramatically reduces eye strain. With awesome low light reading capabilities. |

Yes it works great under any lighting conditions. I love mine. The only thing that sucks is publishers scared of profits jacking up the prices of Ebooks to match real books,or higher. |

Sure do, for about a month now.
LOVE IT. I'm old school, I like books...but the Paperwhite changed everything. Battery charge life is excellent, maybe once a week. Can read in any light. Downloads from Amazon are seamless. The "Experimental Browser" is VERY basic. But if all you want to do is read no worries. I would recommend the purchase of the wall outlet plug. I didn't and it limits me charging from my laptop. Spend the $20. |

I just switched from my kindle keyboard. Works well, faster, better battery life and better fonts easier on my eyes. Well worth the money. |

LOL, I was just thinking the exact same thing - GD appears to be in total agreement on something.... Quoted:

I don't know if I've ever seen GD in complete agreement on anything. But in this case....absolutely correct. I love mine as well. The end is near. |

They work well for what they are. I had one but gave it to my mom when her Kindle died. I got tired of being tied to the Amazon store, the crappy way it sorted books, and the slow screen refresh when you turned pages. I went back to reading things on my 8" tablet. But at least you broke the streak, I was getting afraid that Arf was dividing by zero and the world was going to be swallowed into a giant wormhole. |

I have both - an older one with a light in the case, and a paper white. I usually use the older one. |
