[ARCHIVED THREAD] - Best Pickles.... (Page 1 of 2)

My Pickle Story
There's a farm up-north where we used to hunt. The elderly woman who owned the property canned pickles every year, using what she called: "her Great Grandmothers recipe". (This would date the recipe to the mid to late 1800's) They were the most amazing pickles I've ever had. All of the guys I hunted with agreed! They were Dill Pickles, but there was so much more to them. The flavor was unlike any other pickle I'd ever had. It was nothing for each guy to sit down and eat a small jar at one sitting. Over the years, I always had planned on asking her for the recipe... But she passed before I ever did. At the funeral, I approached her daughter, and shared the story of the great pickles that her Mom made, and how we looked forward to them each year... She looked at me like I had three heads!! She snapped "what pickles"? I said, "You know... her Great Grandma's recipe"? It was if she didn't know what I was talking about. Chalking it up to grief, I again gave her my sympathy, and dismissed myself. I wonder if she had ever shared it with her daughter? Anyhow... If I had the recipe, I would have seriously considered canning and selling them myself. TLDR: Old lady made the worlds best pickles. She died. Recipe lost to eternity. |

"Claussen" ... seriously? Have you ever even had a real pickle?
Made my own is the only real answer. Get a crock, or a bucket. Put in some salt, garlic and other not top secret ingredients, let it ferment in the basement for a month or two. That is how your grandma did it. The best. |

I'm enjoying some trader joes spicy dill chips right now, not too hot and these have a nice crunch.
While they aren't my first choice they aren't bad for a hipster pickle. Give me some home made bread and butter or B&B spicy and I'm a happy man. A old neighbor used to make horseradish dill pickles and they were amazing, he passed and I never got the recipe But we spent many a night in his garage drinking cheap beer and eating those pickles and smoked meat |
