My wife bought us tickets and we saw him at The Old Lady on Brady in Sam's home town Tulsa back before he died.

Very nice guy, met him in person in Rochester NY couple hours before he was due to do a show. Walked by his tour bus (was actually on my way back to my car after getting fingerprinted for pistol permit). He got out of bus as i was walking by and asked to borrow my lighter. Spoke to him for about 15 minutes. Very likeable person in real life.

Eta: just realized it was same year he died that I met him, probably only 3-4 mnths before he died.

He was alright. But like a lot of dead celebrities, I think people's memories of them become skewed toward the positive after awhile. Sort of like the "Absence makes the heart grow fonder" theory.

I saw him as well. He was like 2 hours late, they couldn't find any blow for him.
Truth, he was funny as hell once he got on stage.

Saw him at Trinity University, the stand up part of the show was very good, the Rock and roll show was meh.
