Search didnt quite answer all of my questions. Gf's mom needs a new washer and wants our help in choosing. They like Maytag and I'm not interested in trying to talk them out of that. Going with a top loader. Do the high efficiency ones work better or should they get the ones with the agitator?

I just bought one with an aggitator.  Seems that most reviewers say that they clean better.

ETA, mine won't be deliver until 6/14, so no 1st hand experience.

We just got the biggest (6.2 cu. ft.) Kenmore elite set, which are rebadged Maytag, about a month ago. So far the wife unit loves it, no agitator but has a deep fill option and a sprayer above the tub that blasts the clothes as they wash, works great. Also, absurdly quiet.

Wife loves her Maytag high efficiency top loader. So much that we will be dragging it, and the matching front loading dryer to Florida with us when we move. No aggitator is the way to go.

We have a Maytag now,(bought about 5 months ago) and they come with a good warranty compared to others we shopped for. It has the agitator, which I find actually does clean better compared to the one we had prior. We got it at a Lowe's Hardware. We had a Whirlpool but it was constantly causing us issues after a couple years of use and even without the agitator you had to evenly distribute the clothes in it or it would stop midway through a cycle and a light would light up and say uneven load and stop. The problem was if you were doing a load of laundry overnight while you slept, expecting it to be done by morning, you were in for a surprise.

Those HE top loaders without agitators have a shaft running from the stator up into the wash plate. The tub water seal will eventually fail and ruin the bearings or the shaft above the seal tends to get corroded and seize up where the basket floats on it. They aren't bad machines. They just don't last as long as an old top loader can.

Is that seal typically something that can be checked and replaced if needed?

Even if the bearings and shaft are shot they can be replaced for less than a new washer. It's a lot easier to fix a top loader than a front.
