These two words are not synonymous.

Please ensure that you insure your valuables.

Affect and effect are not synonymous either, but as much as people struggle with the common apostrophe, the finer nuances of the language are hardly worth the gnashing of teeth.

Indeed, people can't even grasp that the contraction of "they are" is "they're," and not "their." Baby steps.

In the small town I live in people confuse sale/sell by using sale as a verb and sell as a noun or object of a preposition.  For example, they will say; I am having a yard sell.  I will sale you my used stuff, it is for sell.

I'm constantly having to correct the ensure / insure thing at work. Drives me nuts.

English is kind of a shitty language, but I like it.

It requires many, many years of living with it to learn it well. It outs those who either are not well educated, or it is not their first language. With the nature of those people, it provides a method to identify and react to their scams.

Kind of like when 'Robert' calls and has the thickest Indian accent you've ever heard.

I still struggle with that one. I went out of my way to learn the correct uses, but it hasn't gotten much easier unfortunately.

That's why I made sure to stop into this thread. I love these ones!

The misuse of "affect" and "effect" is one of my pet peeves.

I also cringe at the now common misuse of pronouns, as in "he gave the keys to Tom and I."

Some folks think that the subjective pronoun is always correct.  It's not.

And in stores, I see signs proclaiming:

"20 items or less" and

"can vegetables"

Aaaaaaggggghhhhhh!!!!!

For all intensive purposes, I will bow out due to my hunger pains.

Its = the possessive; not it's, which is the contraction for "it is".

Because of subject knowledge I ended up editing a magazine for 5 years (as a 2nd pretty much unpaid job). I assure you that taught me more English subtleties than I ever learned in college.

My current twitch is reign/rein.  As a person having "free reign" to act as he or she pleases, or "reigning in" his or her emotions.  I've become really aware of this one, so it maybe a matter of perception, but it seems, to me, the failure rate in GD is about 50%.

^My latest pet peeve.

Possessive pronouns do not use apostrophes (the bane of GD).

My
Your (not you're)
His
Her
Its (not it's)
Our
Their (not they're)
Whose (not who's)

I hole-hardedly agree, but allow me to play doubles advocate here for a moment. For all intensive purposes I think you are wrong. In an age where false morals are a diamond dozen, true virtues are a blessing in the skies. We often put our false morality on a petal stool like a bunch of pre-Madonnas, but you all seem to be taking something very valuable for granite. So I ask of you to mustard up all the strength you can because it is a doggy dog world out there. Although there is some merit to what you are saying it seems like you have a huge ship on your shoulder. In your argument you seem to throw everything in but the kids Nsync, and even though you are having a feel day with this I am here to bring you back into reality. I have a sick sense when it comes to these types of things. It is almost spooky, because I cannot turn a blonde eye to these glaring flaws in your rhetoric. I have zero taller ants when it comes to people spouting out hate in the name of moral righteousness. You just need to remember what comes around is all around, and when supply and command fails you will be the first to go. Make my words, when you get down to brass stacks it doesn't take rocket appliances to get two birds stoned at once. It's clear who makes the pants in this relationship, and sometimes you just have to swallow your prize and accept the facts. You might have to come to this conclusion through denial and error but I swear on my mother's mating name that when you put the petal to the medal you will pass with flying carpets like it’s a peach of cake.

I've even seen the misuse extended lately, with the idea of "towing" a line becoming a new metaphor for upholding a party "line."

It sort of works. Sort of.

But it betrays a fundamental misunderstanding.

Once I had to pound Ensure to ensure that I'd be strong enough to fly home after a business trip interrupted by 4 days of food poisoning thereby insuring against collapsing at the airport from dehydration.

I thought I was going to be stuck they're at there hotel and I didn't want to be their.  So they're grammerphiles.

Another I see all the time is using lead (the soft metal used to make batteries and bullets) in place of led.

Spell check fails when you have the wrong word spelled correctly.
