Looking for a good packpack, 70l max size for a weekend trip.  I have the hammock set up for camping, just need some odds and ends, but my medium Alice pack is too small I think for 3 day trips.

I was looking at Teton 3400s

Do you have an REI near you? Go try on Kelty, Gregory, Osprey, etc, etc internal frames and go with what you think is most comfortable. If you really want to go all out, get a Hill People Gear Ute. That motherfucker is the best.

2nd the REI comment. They are having a sale now so its the time to go. REI shit isnt cheap, but it isnt Walmart quality either.

Just picked up the kuiu icon pro 5200. It's a sweet pack I'll be doing 3-4 nights with.

Best pack I've ever owned and I have a Dueter, Osprey and MH in my closet. Happy hiking!

MyTrail / GoLite makes a great 70L pack.

How much weight are you planning to put in it?

Amazon has some nice ones for like $50.  I own several and they have been terrific.

70L for a 3 day trip is too much, especially with a hammock.

Look in the 35 to 45L range.  After you make a couple trips, you'll even have room in those as you buy better, smaller, lighter gear.

I've not hiked one, but several of my friends have and love them. I also know people with Osprey and they are generally regarded as slightly more comfortable. I think they are a bit lighter as well, but Kelty is cheap.

ETA: the only Kelty I have owned was the MAP3500, which is a large daypack. The suspension and build quality was very nice, so I would not hesitate to buy any of their products. I also have one of their tents and it is also very nice. Again, a bit heavy compared to other brands, but also cheaper and durable. If you are used to an ALICE than any backpacking brand will feel like a feather, though.

My base pack weight is 15lbs.  I use a Granite Gear Crown2 60 for my usual 3-5 day trips.  Food, water, and fuel is additional.  My old Lowe Alpine Contour III was 5 1/2 pounds.  The Granite Gear pack is less than 2 pounds.

Yeah but if you don't need that much space you're just hiking a bigger, heavier pack for no reason. Unless you're going for a week or more at a time or need to carry a lot of cold weather gear you don't need a pack that big.

Probably good sized. For your uses I would say anything between 40L and 55L that has the features and price point you want. Remember that bulky items like a sleeping mat can be sandwhiched under the lid or in the compression straps and don't really need to take up space inside the pack.

Exactly.  But before you order from an outdoor Walmart Big Box store, check out sale items at Eberlestock.  Mystery Ranch and the other premium brand not mentioned pack are lifetime buys.

X1E (Euro) LegacyHalf off a great pack or full price for a mediocre jobber?

I highly recommend Deuter. The ACT-Lite series are expandable, fit different torso lengths and hit that sweet spot between high end and value. Really great packs.
