My Insinkerator 5-81 just gave up the ghost ??! Water is leaking from the reset button so I'm certain it's a goner.

What brand and model should I replace it with? It was 12 years old and did the job for us until today. We're on a septic field, so it gets very limited (almost none) use. We wipe plates into the trash, but usually just the leftover  residue is what goes through it. Occasionally I put a chunk of lemon and a few ice cubes through it to keep it fresh.

I don't want to get too spendy, and I've never put one in before, but I don't mind the challenge. From reading on line, it looks like most do not come with the dishwasher hook up, power cord, attachment ring, rubber splash guard and stoppers. Can I reuse any of these or just suck it up and buy all new parts?

So what brand and model should I consider?

Thanks!

Badger seems to be a choice. I usually just wire up whatever customer buys.

If your previous Insinkerator ran like a champ for 12 years, I'd pick up another one. They run like 80-100 bucks?

Plus if you stick with the same make your mounting hardware and hose hookups will be plug and play. If you do the install yourself MAKE SURE you knock out the plastic plug for the dishwasher or you'll wind up with more water on your hands that what was leaking out of the reset button.

I love my Evolution Excel.  Bought one at my old house, missed it at the new one and replaced the Badger 5 with another.

They make a septic-specific version.

I'd buy that.

THANK YOU! I would have not thought of the knockout plug! This is why I love this place!

My original thoughts were to get the same one so it would be easier to hook up. I just wanted to be sure they hadn't cheapened them out in the last few years and were on the "avoid" list.

I probably don't need to overthink this too much, huh?

The Evolution caught my eye. The septic one is pricey! Yikes! Need to do some more research.

Thanks.

I put in an insinkerator a couple years ago and we like it.

When ours dies I'll probably get another.

After watching the beefier one (1hp?) at my buddies house gobble down a wooden spoon quicker than he could react, it's what I'll be replacing mine with when it goes south.

Waste King is what you seek.  Consumer reports top rated and sold on amazon.

I put in an incinerator last year, it lasted about 9 months and died, but Home Depot gave me a brand new one with no muss no fuss.......   ("Not Me" let the old one run for 20 minutes with hot water on and burnt it up).   I am pretty happy with it, and install is about 1/2 the labor of writing this post.....   you may want a tub of plumbers putty also, I cannot remember if mine had that....   everything else was there on both however.

Good luck!!

My experience is to get an exact replacement, if possible.

If not, you may have to redo the plumbing

I just put one of these in last December. Super quiet and chews up anything. Love it.

Amazon Product
  • SoundSeal Technology, featuring advanced sound insulation and anti-vibration components, reduces noise levels compared to standard disposers
  • MultiGrind Technology with two grind stages to quickly grind difficult food waste you wouldn't put in a standard disposer
  • 34.6 oz. Grind chamber and stainless steel grind components for longevity

I've installed more Insinkerators than I can remember. Never really cared for Waste King.
