| I feel like there needs to be an official 4Runner thread because I can never find the old threads. I'm finally in a position where I can purchase one but was hoping to gather a little knowledge from current owners. My budget is $32k-34 for a 2016. What are the benefits to each model (sr5, trail, limited, premium, can't afford TRD)? For the guys who do have the sun roofs, are they really worth the added upgrade cost? |
|
I bought a brand new 2015 SR5 Premium for $37K out the door. You could probably get a non premium model in your price range, and certainly a used one. The main differences in the Premium were navigation, leather"ique" seats, heated sets, and probably a few other comfort things.
I loved that thing, and regretted selling it. |
| I have a 2016 TRD PRO Quicksand that I ordered via Costco Car Buying at the end of June with delivery at the end of August. Paid $40,500 before TT&L. This was the emailed price from the salesman. I didn't haggle because the Costco price is what you get which was way lower than what other dealers in the area (Houston) were asking for. |
| 2014 Trail Premium here. I love everything about it. Could have got an SR5 but I wanted the 4x4 shifter instead of a knob. Along with the sunroof and the faux leather. I do keep the cover sunroof closed on hot Texas days but it's great at night. I use the rear window more than anything else. I also don't have the KDSS. |
|
Our family has a couple. The Trail is now called the TRD Off Road...same as Trail but has TRD Off Road badging and TRD embroidered seats. The Limited does not use a true 4WD system. No skid plates on an SR5.
You can get a 2017 TRD Off Road 'premium' for $37,500 + TT&L if you negotiate on one that doesn't have all of the useless port/dock add-ons. The non-premium would be ~$1K less. Careful of all the SR5s that dealers send to the local 4X4 shop for add-ons...then try to charge $45K for an SR5 with a bunch of crap bolted to it. I would get a Trail/TRD Off Road. |

its a full time torsen 4wd system I'm not following how that's a bad thing. Unless were still living in the 1950s. |

2016 trail edition premium, bought in Oct, it is great.
there are lots of people from arfcom on t4r.org, you can post some hilarious cross forum parody threads. eta - premium is worth it for sunroof alone. TRDPro doesnt have the sunroof. trails and trds cant have third row seats. the stupid sliding rear shelf just makes money for distributors, and eats cargo volume. 5th gens dont get good gas mileage, 19.4mpg vs ~24+ for a new suburban. resale is so high it is one of the few cars where new might be a comparable deal with used. eta2 - limiteds use the radio keys which might not be reliable long term. |

Limited - AWD, leather seats, deck out to the 9s. SR5 - You basic 4Runner SR45 Premium - a nicer version of the SR5 TRD Off Road - renamed Trail TRD Premium - nicer version of TRD Off Road, akin to the SR5 vs SR5 Premium TRD Pro - minor suspension tweak, mostly cosmetic stuff Both versions of SR5s and the Limited does not come with the Multi-Terrain Select System, only the TRDs do. You can also get the Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System on the TRD Off Road. If you plan on modding it, don't get the Pro. I have a 2012 SR5 4wd with some mods and love it. I have A-Trac and Down Hill Assist -- I haven't had to really use both, flat 'round these parts, but its nice to know its there. A-Trac basically stops the spinning wheel and moves power to the one not spinning and Down Hill Assist helps modulate speed when going down a hill of a certain angle. Some will say it is under powered, I don't think it is. However it may feel that way as the drive-by-wire throttle leaves a lot to be desired, almost as if there is a delay between your foot and the throttle body. It won't win any races but keep in mind you're driving a 4500+lb brick. With my mods I get around 15MPG around the town/city but can get 17MPG on the freeway going 70mph. I bought it in April of last year with 62K on and now have about 102K and it doesn't feel, or show, its age. |

I just got a 2017 TRD off road for $37k OTD and I have pretty terrible negotiating skills. If you don't care about having a locker, skid plates, or crawl control the SR5 will serve you well. If it's without, it's still pretty decent. |

The Limited also comes with ghetto wheels, which is just plain fucking stupid. If you want the Limited because of the convenience features and luxury stuff, get an SR5 Premium instead. You get fake leather instead of real (oh well), and you miss out on a heated steering wheel and some other junk. But it's like $6k less, and you get normal wheels, better ground clearance, and so on. Wife unit bought a '17 SR5 Prem a few months ago. Great truck, and the kids love the back seats. The Limited seems like a good idea until you realize how much is different than on the 4x4 version. It's meant to be driven on roads, pretty much all the time. |

And it has been done, and I have wheeled side-by-side with FJ cruisers and Limited 4Runners that have the Torsen system. It's better on road, and it's extremely capable off road. I can't imagine a shortcoming once you factor in the center locking ability and the fact that you have a low range. |

Sticker on our 2016 SR5 4x4 w/XP package was $42k new. Haggled down to $37k.
Our 2011 SR5 Premium had the sunroof... our 2016 does not.. and honestly I don't miss it one bit. All it did was added wind noise and extra heat into the cockpit. Attached File |

2011 trail, love that its paid for, hate that milage only goes from poor to shit with mods and still could use a little power, mechanicaly reliable but some some quality issues, would buy again.
Getting 15mpg in city and on highway with lift, wheels, intake exhaust. I drive 80mph mostly on highway though. Goes like hell off road. |

We have a 16' Trail without KDSS. I hate sun roofs, and wasn't a fan of the "leather" in the premiums. Optioned out of KDSS for the ease of mods. New tires the first week and WeatherTech liners were the only thing done to it. I've tested it in snow, and a few trails in CO and NM. Love it.
When these tires wear out I'm looking to add a 1.5-2" lift, and 275 BFGs. A Southern Speed bumper will also be in the plans, as well as so cargo space management. |

Tag In the next few months we will be looking for a 2017 TRD Pro. OP: I don't like the sunroof. It is an option on the premium models this year. At your price range, I'd recommend a base 2017 TRD Off-Road. You will have to check around. In my area, they are only currently being built with the KDSS option ($2k and not worth it, IMO). Be prepared to order one and wait a few months. The Off-Roads and Pro's are rare but totally worth the wait. PM me if you are close to West Tennessee. |

I have the TRD Pro, Inferno Orange. I got the first one in all of CO, which made me happy. It definitely wasn't in your budget range, and I doubt you'll find one quickly. They're way too in demand right now. It is, without a doubt, the best car I've ever owned. I've had it just over 2 years and just hit 60k. That thing has taken me everywhere and never given me any trouble. |

what do you mean the limited does not use a true four-wheel-drive system? ![]() It's a very capable system, but is not a "4x4". It's full time AWD with a variable torque split to a Max of 50% front. During normal driving it will vary output to the wheels with the best traction. It has a center locking diff to fix it at 50-50 torque split and an electric actuated HI and Low range. I love mine. I've never had to use the center diff lock and have only used 4Lo a few times (once last weekend at devil's hole near arrowhead). It performs excellent in wet and snowy onroad conditions without giving it an thought and if you live somewhere it snows or rains a lot I would give it a hard look and research) onroad manners are excellent with the vehicle reminding me of driving a larger Camry onroad. Off-road it still provides good performance. Some will say real 4x4 with lockers will do more difficult trails but if you plan on leaving either choice stock you won't see a difference as clearance will probably be your biggest issue. |

We have the standard 2014 SR5. My only issue was I wanted a sun roof but at the price we got this for I'm not complaining. We've only used it on short trips and a couple of runs over to the cabin, sits in the garage most of the time, have almost 6K on it. There is plenty of room for the pups to travel with us which was what we were looking for when we bought it. Love the thing.
