I have a requirement to push files from remote locations and currently we're using a portable satellite dish with 256 up and down.  It's getting a bit pricey both in terms of data costs and install costs. I've been pondering using a sat hotspot....file sizes are 1.5mb and we need to push about 10 a day, sometimes more.

Anyone have any recommendations as to device and data plans?

Thanks in advance.

It looks like they charge for the data time, not the data amount.  I am here to see what the real world data rates up/down are for them.  I hope we have someone who has used them.

ETA:

2400 bps data speed which is suitable for light email applications performed using the Mail & Web app. Outfitter Satellite does not recommend the Iridium GO! for web browsing or heavy data use applications.

oh snap.. its like 1987.  100k will take about 10 minutes to download/upload if i remember my 2400baud BBS bikini photo download times when I was in jr high correctly

so 1.5mb x 10/day is not realistic.

Aren't they getting cheaper and more reliable with the new Sats going up?

It is supposed to get cheaper and faster with the new satellites but there's been a delay of a few months.  The speeds are supposed to be in the .5mb range. I'm also looking at BGANs but the problem there is the cost of data. These are going to little brown guys and their "data discipline" is less than stellar.

Understand I've been out of this world for a few years, so things could have changed.  I have extensive experience w/ Bgan, Legacy INMARSAT, GS, Thuraya, and Iridium & Iridium SBD from several years ago.

BGAN is a good option, probably the most cost effective for the performance.  It is not cheap, however.

Thuraya used to be a much better option than Iridium, I've been out of this for a while but I know that Iridium has not improved any.  Of course there are other issues w/ Thuraya, ownership and data xport locations may be an issue for you.

Iridium data sucks.  Iridium short burst data is better -- it's actually really good - but is going to be horrendously expensive to move any significant amount of data.
