I am in the market for a new laptop within the next month or so. I went by Best Buy last night just to look. Originally went in to look at the Microsoft Surface Book but a sales associate pointed out the HP Spectre be a really that seemed to be more computer for the money.
-I really like the ability of the touch screen and being able to write on the screen. -I like the folding/remove able screen. -Will be used mostly for work. No gaming -Eventually will be used for some video editing but not a priority at this point. -Will eventually need to be able to run dual screens. -Office necessary Where do you folks buy your computers? Do you buy direct or some where like Best Buy? Is a protection plan necessary? Is 8gb and 256 adequate or is the 16gb and 512 worth the upgrade? Any recommendations or advice would be greatly appreciated. |

I would not buy anything from best buy. Fry's is the go to for most PC parts, if you want a brick store. If not, newegg and amazon is where I would buy. Use best buy as a reference but I do not like to buy from them. Poor service and inflated prices.
The Surface is decent, I am not a fan of them. Having fixed and worked with a lot of Surfaces, they are generally problematic. However, if you are doing casual work they will do just fine. If you need something portable, I would say an HP elite book. That's all we use when it comes to laptops. I have been pleased, no touch screen though. ETA: Is a protection plan necessary? If you are clumsy, yes. If you are careful with your things, I would not purchase it. That being said, some one always spills a drink on their laptop
Is 8gb and 256 adequate or is the 16gb and 512 worth the upgrade? I really like the 16gb RAM it is much better. You will probably never fully use 8gb though. If you plan on using USB drives, get the smaller drive and save some cash. |

Get upgraded memory when you buy it as you will need it down the road and messing with it later is a pain, if doable. Shop Amazon, Newegg (be careful of 'marketplace' dealers) to find the best price. Buying refurbed is not a huge deal as long as you also pay for an extended warranty, but factor that into the cost up front. Right now I am also thinking about what I might buy, convertible laptop is high on the list. |

i have a surface pro 3. I liked it a lot. I recently got the Surface Book. It does everything you said you need and does it very well. Good build quality.
I would look at Surface Book or Surface Pro depending on if you will use it more like a laptop or more like a tablet. |

I was looking at something similar (no need for video editing so I haven't tried it) but I ended up with a ThinkPad yoga x1. I7 and 500gb at $1120 on Amazon. It was a refurb but I have not found any problems with it thus far.
I'm a big fan of the ThinkPad keyboards and pointing stick but this also has a trackpad plus touch screen if you're interested |

I have no issues with HP. They have always been reliable for me.
I just replaced my 7 year old HP DV7 17" laptop last month. Still running just fine. I bought a 17" Envy with a 512gb SSD 16gb ram with i7-7500U & NVIDIA GeForce 940MX (4GB DDR3 dedicated), touch screen - for $1,000 direct from HP No, it does not fold in to 7 different shapes. But a 17" laptop is what I prefer. My laptop lives a vigorous life. Back & fort to work. In the shop plugged in to one of the CNC machines. Editing drawings & programs. Watching a movie on long flights. It runs SharkCad Pro for CAD perfectly. I like having the full keyboard. And yes, I can do parametric modeling with the pad just fine. Windows 10 took a couple of days to adjust to. Works fine. Even the MS Edge browser works ok. HP has been a solid unit for me. Had a Dell shit the bed in 3 months. |
| I'd get a surface pro 4 or surface book if I was looking to get one. 8 GB ram is fine if you're not doing development or something that's memory intensive. Though, adding hard drive space on a Surface is pretty hard so if you need the storage, get the upgrade. |
