So we just moved into our new home a couple of months ago.  There is a Trane AC unit that was installed in the summer of 2015 along with a Trane furnace.  When the AC kicks on, the outside unit buzzes etc but the big blower fan on top doesn't kick on.  The furnace blower fan runs and the air is cold.  After about a minute the AC fan outside kicks on and runs.  Is this normal?  Our old Lennox never ran like that.

Just wanting to get it right. So the outside fan doesn't kick on immediately but does turn on after a little while EVERY time? What is the trane model?  It may be programing to save electricity.

Could be normal operation to save energy. It has sensors that detect pressure and it's waiting for the pressure of the refrigerant to get to a certain point before it kicks on the condenser fan.

Now if it doesn't do this every time you may have an issue. I'd look at the capacitor or the contactor if that's the case.

sounds like a fire ant stuck in the contactor or a bad fan capacitor.

can you post a picture of your model and serial?

It's an XL15i

Photobucket is not responding right now. Will post when it comes back up

Not familiar with it but buzzing from a motor usually isn't a good thing.

But because it does start after a minute or so every time I'd lean towards normal.

With regard to the condenser fan not immediately running and kicking on shortly after, it seems your unit may have a pressure cycling device installed to allow it to perform optimally in colder outside ambient conditions.

Buzzing could be his compressor running. Fan delayed while pressure builds.

The buzzing is not the motor but the compressor and stuff coming on.  And the furnace blows cold air even with the condenser fan not running.  Then the fan kicks in after a minute or so.  And it's done it both times I have noticed it coming on.  This is the first time we have used it so it's all new to us

We have two Trane units, OP, and they both make that buzzing on startup. From a mechanical standpoint it's not a comforting noise, but both seem to work fine so I try to ignore it.

Mine had the bad fan capacitor also. The fan eventually wouldn't start at all.

My Trane makes the same noise.  Fifteen years old. No issues.  I'd agree with others......Normal.

I have an expensive ass trane system and I'm not impressed by it. I do like wifi.

Probably not a bad idea for a seasonal check anyway by a local contractor. Especially since it's new to you and there are questions.
