I drive I-75 between Tampa and Ocala weekly. It's been under construction for over 3 years now.

Why does Florida build 10 lane overpasses (6 traffic lanes with 4 breakdown lanes) over county and state 2 lane secondary roads? In Georgia and other states the little 2 lane secondary roads go over the much wider interstates and must cost a fraction of bridging 10 lanes over 2. The added fuel needed to pull these grades is wasted and for anyone that has crested an overpass at speed to find the traffic stopped in front of them, safety reasons too. This seems asinine.

Why is this done? Typical gov waste (bigger kickbacks)? Stupidity?

My only guess is that in the future, it is easier to add lanes to a bridge than it is to widen a road that goes beneath an overpass.

That drive sucks. I feel sorry for anyone having to endure that stretch of road.

I have to drive it a number of times a year and there is never a "right" time to hit it.

Eta:  for those in the Seattle area this is like the S-Curve construction situation or the overpasses in Bellevue and Everett.

Having never been to Florida, I'm going to assume that it is likely due to right of way costs and impacts to adjacent land areas.

ETA::Oh, as for safety reasons, I call bullshit, unless you are driving significantly above the design speed limit.

You do know that the US Interstate Highway system is designed so that about 50 miles or so, all four lanes are 2-3 miles exactly straight so that our strategic bombers can land on them in an emergency, yes?

You definitely haven't been to Florida.

Maybe so there are no clearance issues for large/oversized loads?

I would expect they're built wider than the road for future expansion, or as previously said for hurricane evac to maximize traffic flow.

i live in this corridor. i drive under the missing i75 north bound over pass at hwy 50 every day. for the past 40 years i75 between tampa and atlanta has been under major construction. there is always something big happening somewhere along that route.

the current reason (only thing i can figure) is all the semi dump beds driving down the road with the bed in the up position and smashing into the bridge (this has happened 3 times in the last 10 years that i have seen personally not the actual crash but the tie up after the crash waiting for investigators), how the fuck does this even happen?

if you can answer why every fucking on ramp is 8 feet long but every off ramp is 6.4 miles of circular spinny aroundy i will answer your other questions.

I have also watched this mess for several years, just amazing all the money they throw at it so it looks good.

Larger high elevation for hurricane parking?

Eisenhower Self Defense Highway System.
Compared to bridges in most of Europe are as huge and support tracked vehicle type weights.

just wait until they throw more palm trees at this problem. for 20 years i thought palm trees produced 2x4s as some sort of fucked up fruit.
