Is there anyway a computer stupid guy like my self could connect remotely to the server at work? I brought my computer home to take care of a few things but just realized I can't connect to the server...is this possible?

ETA: I hope my "techie talk" is up to snuff.

Ask your it dept?

What kind of work?

Do you need access to a fileshare? Sharepoint? Confluence? Some other collaboration tool? Email?

Seriously, what kind of "server" are you talking about connecting to?

You should open an IT ticket. If you're at an organization of any decent size, they probably have a VPN setup for you to use.

We are a small family owned business, our IT is contracted. It can wait until Monday if need be.

My email works at home but I can't get the "shared files" at home...hopefully this is what you're looking for.

This, different for each company.

We use a VPN client and have to have a valid certificate issued by the company. We can only get that certificate installed when we are on the work network.

You usually have to VPN in to the work network. Do you have a Cisco VPN or similar program on your work computer?

I'm connected through a VPN tunnel at this moment.

currently I'm on a soft vpn tunnel through my home network. normally I go through a VPN appliance that also runs my work IP Phone.

yes, it is easily done.

but it requires some work on the IT side to happen

I currently use the bigEdge IP client for soft VPN

I use a Cisco VPN concentrator for hard-vpn and my IP Phone.

yes it can be done, no there is nothing you as an end user can do without their assistance. assuming you have a competent IT that has properly secured them. If you find a way in without them, tell your boss they need a new it dept.

It would be better to check with IT because remote connections can go pretty wrong security wise.

Make sure you add "kindly do the needful" at the end of the ticket. That will ensure it will be done correctly and promptly.

Shared files... Well, if it's a windows server, and your computer makes a windows SMB connection, then you probably would need at minimum the IP address and share name on the server. Then you would need no impediments to the protocol at your router, at your ISP's router, etc. etc. If you have a VPN set up, then that would be how you "map a drive" on your windows server without all those networking firewalls getting in the way.

Without specific instructions from your IT department, I think you're boned.

If anyone could connect to the work server, someone in your IT department is going to get fired.
I use VPN, virtual private network. So, when I log in, it is as if I were in the office.
Your IT department probably has a way for you to log in a secure way.
