[ARCHIVED THREAD] - Stethoscopes (Page 1 of 2)

| We have a family friend who just passed her boards to become either a nurse practitioner or physicians assistant (not sure which) and we're thinking about getting her a good stethoscope as a congratulatory gift, the issue is I have no idea which one to get her. Can a good one be bought for say $150 or less? I have heard good things about the littman (may have the spelling off) cardiology line but they may be overkill and out of our budget. She (the nurse) will not be going into trauma or er medicine, other than that she may be joining a family type practice/clinic or may stay in the hospital environment she is in now (as an RN). Help! |

I don't think you can go wrong with a Littmann, however I've found that by the time folks are graduating, they've already found and own the stethoscope that they like. |

From the way the paramedics around here talk about stethoscopes, the best way to get a Littman is to lift one from a paramedic. As a medic making decisions based on findings I would get the electronic version if I were to buy another. I've used buddies and they are awesome. For a day to day nurse she would be stoked with any littman in your price range. |

she uses whatever the hospital gives her to use, up till this point in her career a nice stethoscope was a luxury she just didn't have the extra for... |

Ortho here.....what is a stetho-scope?
Littman 2 or 3 is what I bought for med school. It was nice. Also make sure she doesn't already have one, if she just graduated from school she may already have a nice one.

When she gets her first external ear infection from someone's nastiness on the community stethoscopes, it won't seem like a luxury. Much like the day during SCUBA training when I decided to buy my own regulator after inhaling a stranger's chunk of coughed-up lung butter. Quoted:

Don't worry. I'm an anesthesiologist. I'll let you know if the patient's internal antibiotic pump breaks down. You'll have to wait for me to finish my crossword and silence those pesky alarms first, though. ![]() |

The best stethoscope I've used is the Littman Classic II Pediatric version. I can hear everything with that. I use it on everything!
Had the same one since 1998 or 1999. Just replaced the tubing about 2 years ago. Here's some pricing from one of my distributors. I think some on here have a good website with decent pricing on stethoscopes. Master Cardiology $220 Master Classic II $121 Classic III $95 Classic II SE $80 Classic II Peds $95 Littmann Lightweight $50 |

What would you suggest? My RN niece was just accepted into a nurse practitioner program. I'll need ideas for the future. Quoted:

This is the best Littmann I've ever owned. Extra thick tubing and a solid head makes it super easy to hear. I based my selection on a recommendation from a paramedic in a thread here who rode in the back of ambulances and said the Master Classic II was the absolute best for reducing external noise.
If I patient starts talking while I have the ear tips in I have to take them out in order to hear. If I lost mine today I would buy the exact same one again. |

What does she need outside of any medical supply? That's what you get her. Booze is always a very accepting gift to any nurse. Quoted:

@tveddy what do you mean? Like engraved? If so where? Seems like if it was on The chest piece it would mess it up?

When borrowing someones stethoscope it is standard practice to alcohol swab it both before and after use. Anyone who doesn't is a heathen. |
