We have a family friend who just passed her boards to become either a nurse practitioner or physicians assistant (not sure which) and we're thinking about getting her a good stethoscope as a congratulatory gift, the issue is I have no idea which one to get her. Can a good one be bought for say $150 or less? I have heard good things about the littman (may have the spelling off) cardiology line but they may be overkill and out of our budget. She (the nurse) will not be going into trauma or er medicine, other than that she may be joining a family type practice/clinic or may stay in the hospital environment she is in now (as an RN). Help!

Littmann Cardiology III.  I had a II during my rotations and found many a murmur that the Attending did not find.  It will run about 170.00.

I like my Cardiology II, but would get one of the powered ones that amplify sound of buying now.

I have tinnitus though.

I carry my own Littmann Cardiology III at work.  I hear a lot better than the ones work buys.  I got it only for under $100... I'd look around.

I don't think you can go wrong with a Littmann, however I've found that by the time folks are graduating, they've already found and own the stethoscope that they like.

A very ratty Cardiology III hangs in my main work locker, with gutted paracord on it instead of a name tag.
In my closet at home are my beloved & now-retired IISE and my travel scope, a Classic IISE.

Littmann fanboy for 20+ years.

Looks like the only currently made "cardiology" littmans are the IV and the master, I'm assuming the classic II and III are the legacy cardiology ones? Is that correct?

From the way the paramedics around here talk about stethoscopes, the best way to get a Littman is to lift one from a paramedic.

last fall I needed to burn some money fast, to use up a health savings account before it was cancelled.

went to a website and bought a stethoscope and an otoscope.

no I didn't need them.  no use for them.      also added a couple nice first-aid kits to the order.

Did you take mine?  I'm missing two littmans right now.

As a medic making decisions based on findings I would get the electronic version if I were to buy another.   I've used buddies and they are awesome.  For a day to day nurse she would be stoked with any littman in your price range.

When she gets her first external ear infection from someone's nastiness on the community stethoscopes, it won't seem like a luxury. Much like the day during SCUBA training when I decided to buy my own regulator after inhaling a stranger's chunk of coughed-up lung butter.

Ortho here.....what is a stetho-scope?

Littman 2 or 3 is what I bought for med school. It was nice.

Also make sure she doesn't already have one, if she just graduated from school she may already have a nice one.

My brother in law's mother who was a nurse her whole life got me a Littman 2 S.E. after passing NCLEX.

It was very sweet of her to do, but honestly I notice very little difference between that and the $12 stethoscope I had in nursing school.

Don't worry. I'm an anesthesiologist. I'll let you know if the patient's internal antibiotic pump breaks down. You'll have to wait for me to finish my crossword and silence those pesky alarms first, though.

When borrowing someones stethoscope it is standard practice to alcohol swab it both before and after use.  Anyone who doesn't is a heathen.

The best stethoscope I've used is the Littman Classic II Pediatric version. I can hear everything with that. I use it on everything!

Had the same one since 1998 or 1999. Just replaced the tubing about 2 years ago.

Here's some pricing from one of my distributors.
I think some on here have a good website with decent pricing on stethoscopes.

Master Cardiology $220
Master Classic II $121
Classic III $95
Classic II SE $80
Classic II Peds $95
Littmann Lightweight $50

What does she need outside of any medical supply?  That's what you get her.  Booze is always a very accepting gift to any nurse.

I use a Littman Cardiology II or III cant remember which one.  The battery ones are nicer but probably more expensive.

I do psychiatry though so my stethoscope doesnt get as much action as it used to.

This is the best Littmann I've ever owned. Extra thick tubing and a solid head makes it super easy to hear. I based my selection on a recommendation from a paramedic in a thread here who rode in the back of ambulances and said the Master Classic II was the absolute best for reducing external noise.

If I patient starts talking while I have the ear tips in I have to take them out in order to hear. If I lost mine today I would buy the exact same one again.

I just bought a nice Litmann for a friend that graduated and was told by several nurses and other assorted medical people it was a great gift. I would love to know why @jr1092 thinks it is a bad gift.

I got a couple of the Littmann Master Cardiology's and I think they are great.

Standard practice on scope hygiene occasionally has to take a back seat in dire emergencies. That's how it happened to me with a patient in extremis, and I got handed a random scope.

Litman makes a name plate.  My friends told me to order one so nobody snagged it.
