Need a cheap dual monitor solution for a work project/ design related.

I have my work laptop, and extra monitor. What else do I need to make this function.

Needs to be cheap

What video ports does the laptop/laptop dock (if you have one) have?

I have 2 USB available, no dock

I would say a docking station with the appropriate cabling, and another monitor.

You'll need to configure your display settings, but that is simple, and  I'm sure you can find YouTube vids for that.

More details would be helpful...

Do you mean extending your desktop to include both the integrated laptop monitor and the external monitor or are you trying to have the laptop drive two external monitors?

As long as your video card can support 2 monitors, all you need is the right cable from your laptop to the monitor.  Depends on what your laptop has?

VGA
USB-C
Display port
Mini display
Etc.

You might be able to use a usb to ? depending on what input the monitor has.

You probably have more than that. We are interested in things like VGA, HDMI, and DisplayPort jacks

I plug the external monitor cable into the vga port on the laptop, then hit the function button while pushing the screen selection button on the keyboard.  Select extend, then boom...dual monitors.  No cost.

I could go to work to do this but I would rather be at home.

What model number is your laptop? We need a bit more info to tell how or if it is even possible.

USB to one monitor and hdmi to other.  Right click on desktop to go to display settings where video card will have to support two monitors.  Probably does

Do you know what kind of USB ports you have? 2.0 or 3.0 (Superspeed)?

My laptop has two 3.0 ports. I use one of these to connect two external monitors:

https://www.amazon.com/Plugable-Universal-Docking-Station-Ethernet/dp/B00ECDM78E?tag=vglnk-c102-20

Both monitors are plugged into the docking station, and then the docking station connects to my laptop via one USB 3.0 port.

The USB on the monitor is usually just to make it easier to hook up things like keyboards, mice, etc.  You can't drive the video over it, unless it is a pretty unusual monitor.

What model laptop is it?

Yeah OP, you aren't looking in the right place.  The monitor USB ports that are intended for connecting devices (e.g., keyboard, mouse) are usually in a convenient and visible location.  The USB feed port and all of the audio/video ports are usually less prominent, often down-facing and sometimes partially hidden by a removable panel.

And the laptop must have some sort of video out unless it was bought at a gas station.  It might not have VGA, but it probably has either or both HDMI and/or DisplayPort.

As noted above, post the model number of the laptop...and do it for the monitors as well, because there isn't nearly enough info here to help.  And you also didn't answer my prior question, so you aren't helping yourself here:
