Got to use this FBI computer based shooting simulator, and I sucked.... It's a totally immersive interactive video simulator, think of first person shooter video game but life size. It was by far the best training I have been experienced because of its ability to record performance of every shot in time and placement.
I shot 1 friendly during an active shooter situation at a school. They came around the corner no way to ID with gun drawn. Shot at bad guys in a office setting at hit all around them (25 yards, took multiple hits to eliminate threat) truly eye opening when being shot back at. Anyone else ever use this? No amount of paper shooting prepares you to see kids bleeding out begging for help while having to engage a threat as this simulator depicts. Total respects to first responders for there dedication to the safety of others. |

We use them at the academy. They are a bit one sided as you don't get "true" feedback in real time. But it beats the alternative of shooting each other with real rounds.

We were put through various situations, and then had a debriefing to talk through the scenario with the instructors. the pellets were kind of pricey so you only did each scenario once. |

Ehh the FBI ain't got jack fucking shit on the "threat management center."
The VIPER virtual training room would give you real skills. ![]() Failed To Load Title |

I've been to the one at the FBI Academy in Quantico, VA. It is a very large system with a pneumatically charged Glock pistol (to simulate
the slide operating and I think also for sound). Our group had a chance to go through several scenarios individually (so those waiting could not see what was happening). It is very realistic and the action is non-linear; as in the instructor can alter the scenario based upon your actions. Each scene is filmed over and over with several different actions on the parts of the actors. These are somehow seamlessly blended together based upon the instructors inputs. So, you come across as an agent in command and in control of the scene, they can make the perps compliant. You seem to be a puss, its on like popcorn! Case in point, one scenario had you and several other agents (seen milling about in the home searching and so forth) in a home with a suspected husband and wife crime duo standing side by side. You have them at gun point with their hands in the air... ...then the wife begins to very, very, very slowly (did I mention very slowly?) take little tiny side steps towards her hubby. There are two possible outcomes with her actions: 1) (when I did it) I noticed the movement and shouted at her "don't fucking move!" She complies and stays were she is. The scenario ends... 2) (when several of my co-workers tried doing the sim) They do not notice the movement, they stand there with their weapon pointed at the couple and say nothing. She manages to get next to her husband. He then quickly bends forward and she pulls out an Uzi that was tucked in the back of his pants, and guns everyone down. That earned my co-workers some side-eye from the sim operator. That FATS facility was the highlight of my visit to Quantico. |

FATS is ancient technology.
If you enjoyed that, you can rent time on the simulator at Buds in Sevierville. If you used the upper tier system w/ the CO2 powered firearm simulators, Bud's system isn't that nice. Quoted:
. Last time I went thru FATS was 3-4 years ago. Tell me the truth OP, did you shoot the chick in the convertible with the big ol tits??? I should have. The only one I ever had real problems with was the garage door. No real way to 'win' that one... . |

Retired certified instructor which included FATS...(Simunition & paintball).
My FATS cert was at the FATS facility... My reason for posting... they had a large sims setup with multiple screens, a simulated Coast Guard ship and belt fed machine guns wired into the system with the CO2 for realistic function. And no... we did not get to use it. It was the tour at the beginning of the course. Of the three... Simunition gives you the best feedback when you fail. Pain helps you find and use any and all cover/concealment! Being an old guy who was raised in the 50s and 60s... we were taught to shut up when watching TV. I had the hardest time yelling at the massive screen. Shooting and reaction was acceptable, but I always got scored down for not running my mouth at the screen! |
| When I was in high school we had a law enforcement program. We were invited to the nearby naval base to play on their FATS. they were supposed to load LEO scenarios but someone dropped the ball and it was still military scenarios. Forgive me for not knowing the proper terminology. I was 17 and it was a looong time ago. They had M16s with grenade launchers and belt fed guns. They also had a .50cal on a tripod. Shit was a blast! |

The old PRISM system my job had shot .68 plastic balls. It had a camera that fed to a monitor with s crosshair on it and a joystick to aim it. |

Used FATS, but not Vitra, it is definitely an eye opening experience...
The Narrative can be branched on the fly by the guy running the computer... meaning the person with the gun may not be next time, or there maybe multiples with guns or no-one that needs shooting, did pretty good there got killed once out of 5x because they decided to load multiple shooters and I thought it was over... oops. I even did one with some guy who went Aloha Snackbar on me... died. |
| Used it with the county in the mid-nineties. First gen system. Of course, it was fairly recent technology, so we were amazed. And, frequently, embarrassed. Not a world-changing thing, but a good tool to add to the others. Personally, I had a hard time getting up to speed, having grown up with tv as a non-participatory activity. |

I've run it with both a pistol and an M4.
I was critiqued for "overkill" when firing 4-6 rounds per target with the M4 on semi in a hallway/active shooter scenario. "Do you have the selector on auto?" "...no. I just have a fast finger." With the pistol, and my entire security department watching, when I was on the ship, the hostage scenario and 2-3 rounds to the occular-cranial cavity durkng playback generated "Holy shit!" comments from the peanut gallery. That was a proud moment. Yes, the old man can operate, he just doesn't get the opportunity. The permanent install we had at my security department at the base included an air gun fouled with the video that fired 12mm plastic BBs back at you. If you missed or took to long you'd get shot. That! Was excellent training, those BBs stung like hell. |
Anyone have a video of the simulator? Is it like this?

VirTra V-300 is much more advanced than FATS
http://www.virtra.com/v-300/ I have trained a couple of times on this one, you have to keep turning your head to see the full screen |
|
I did it back in my LEO days, many years ago, I was really nervous but kicked butt. Before we did the shoot scenarios they did a thing where the giant screen was filled with colored dots other things. They tell you to shoot a certain color or whatever. Anywho, I was crazy good at it. The testers said they had never seen anyone come close to scoring that high. He made me do it several times for some reason while everyone else did it once. He said he didn't even think it was possible and he'd been running the simulator for a few years. He ran it up crazy fast and I could keep up, they were amazed. Finally, he slows it way down and has me try it. I couldn't hit crap after that. For some reason that pleased him but it frustrated the hell out of me.
After that we did the actual shoot at movie people part. I was a new officer in a smaller department, another larger agency was sponsoring the training and the chief of that department was in my group. I was crazy nervous around him and all these guys who had been police officers for many years. As it turned out, in addition to setting their little "shoot the colored dots" all-time record I also scored the highest in the other part of the simulation (at least for all the people who tested in our area) . The FATS folks were all talking about how well I did and the chief from the sponsoring department walks over and whispers in my ear "coming here and shaming the chief of police by out shooting him is a bad idea". I was already nervous and a fair bit intimidated by the people around me so that freaked me out. Like 30 seconds later he whispers in my ear again "I'm just kidding, well done, that was some fantastic shooting". I was so relieved LOL. I thought the guy was actually angry with me lol. At the time FATS was awesome. It's pretty low down on the simulation scale now but it's still better training than just talking about it. Nowadays they use the same kind of simulation for hunting simulators (which are pretty darn fun too). I'd like to try it again, probably couldn't hit squat these days. |

When I was 14 a buddy and I had a FATS at an Army base to ourselves with a technician for probably 4-5 hours. It was awesome.
I went dual-wield with M60's, killed everything with 203's, and just had the time of my life. They're fun if you don't have to take it seriously. |
