tl;dr: Why are AV receivers so big?

We purchased a new piece of furniture for the living room TV and now my AV receiver doesn't fit. I currently have a 4+ year old Pioneer Elite with a bunch of features we don't use. I used to have every HDMI port in use, but now an Xbox One has replaced all those other devices.

So, looking for a compact 5.1 channel receiver with digital audio optical input. Also like the banana plug connectors. Have not been able to find anything compact that's more than two channels. Suggestions?

ETA: The current receiver is too deep for the new shelves. Also, antenna goes into the Xbox One, which goes into the TV via HDMI. I then have an digital optical output that goes from the TV to the receiver. Nothing else goes into the receiver.

Have you looked into the Marantz Slimline series?

I did, but best I could tell their receivers are still 12-13" deep. Probably need something about 9-10" deep max.
