I wanted to go wireless so i ended up wit a 4-pack of the Netgear Arlo Pro's. Â I just put them up yesterday but they seem to work well

Hikvision or Dahua if you are tech savvy.
Lots of the other stuff that people are recommending (Canary, Arlo, ect) require you to grant 3rd party access to your cameras in order to serve up data to a smartphone application. I'm not really cool with that. You can connect to Hikvision and Dahua cameras directly from your smart phone with no 3rd party intermediary. The only trick is setting up your connection in a secure manner so that you don't open up a hole for hackers to pour through. Their smart phone apps can view up to 16 cameras at once as long as your connection can handle it. I have 8 connected to my phone and it never chokes in 4G coverage areas. You can tweak the bitrate of the sub-stream (low resolution suitable for phone viewing) to assist in this. I use 256kbps per camera and it works fine. |

Foscam When my second child came around, I ordered another Foscam, but apparently they got sold to some other company and the quality has gone down considerably. I ended up ordering this Amcrest model off Amazon, and it has been wonderfully reliable. For smart phone monitoring, if you are on Android, use Tiny Cam Pro. It's awesome. |

I was thinking about this the other day. I have a spare laptop, that I could dedicate to running a video security system. I'd just need the cameras and software. Thanks for reminding me OP.
I'll have to look around here and see if anyone has done something similar. |
