Got them before the river rat trespassers stole them. Only a couple of pounds, but has not been all that wet here either. Gonna check again next week as we are supposed to get more rain.

Nice haul. I've been wanting to get out all day but between work and thunderstorms it's been impossible. It should be perfect tomorrow and Sunday.

MORELs are delicious.

I'm going hunting for some on wednesday. I have a few secret spots that yield a few pounds.

What I learned today. Do not wear sunglasses as they block out light that you need. Make circles in the areas yo find them as the light changes ones I had passed by suddenly appeared right in front of me!

I have never run across a morel in the wild. Not once, and I have spent a lot of time in the woods.

Paid an arm and a leg one time to have a bag shipped to me.  They were delicious.

I personally like Portabella's better, but the wife and kids like Morrells. Although they are good in mushroom gravy.

Morels are best split in half, mounded with crab meat and cheese, and broiled in clarified butter and chablis. It helps if they're larger.

Any tips on finding these? I have spent a lot of time looking without any success.

I find them around Sycamore trees. The more leaves and light debris on the forest floor seems to help as it holds moisture.

I was taught to look for a dead or dying elm tree. They can go grow anywhere though. They usually grow in bunches so if you find one then stop and start combing the area. There will likely be several more.

The hardest part is finding the first one.

I remeber the first time i hunted for them. I could swear there were none a second ago, but when i saw the first one they suddenly appeared everywhere.

That's usually the way it happens. When I was hunting morels I'd find a likely place and just stop and really look hard for a couple minutes before moving to the next likely place.

Once I saw one, the other would appear...almost as if by magic. Multicam ain't got shit on morels.

A guy that works for me (barely, this time of year) has gotten 3-400 pounds so far. Local buyer is
paying $28 per lb. I can't compete with what he makes doing this, so I give him free reign. He's been
doing it every year in this area for 30 years. Says he is ready to move to higher elevations next week.

I use a decoy on the end of my mushroom hunting stick. The other shrooms see the decoy moving and raise their head to figure out how the decoy is moving.
That's when I pounce on 'em and grab them...

Otherwise, get out there in the woods and look. An experienced hunter would be helpful but not a requirement... I've found them in woods, fields, gravel roads, wet, dry, hot, cold...
