Got in an argument today with the director at our college today. He put these signs up a month ago because he was tired of students using other doors to leave the building. He only wants everyone to use one door only in the whole building. He put these signs covering up all the exit signs but the one door. I install these as a commercial electrician and told him it's against code to cover these in any way. He said he does not care.
If there was a fire and everyone was running around trying to find the one exit that could be used they would all die. Attached File |

See what the Director has to say after that visit. |
| Call your local fire dept and ask for an inspection. I think that what is going on is illegal as all get out. The doors can be marked emergency exit only instead of exit. Which would accomplish the desired action. An alarm could be installed on each emergency exit only door also. |

What I would cite them for in Ohio,
(4) 1030.4 Exit signs. Exit signs shall be installed and maintained in accordance with paragraph (K)(1011) of this rule. Decorations, furnishings, equipment or adjacent signage that impairs the visibility of exit signs, creates confusion or prevents identification of the exit shall not be allowed. |

I don't have my NFPA 101 book with me right now, but that is a hard violation of the Life Safety Code.
If that is how he manages his facility I have no doubt there are many more infractions. If he is doing this to public infrastructure I would encourage you to let the local fire code official know about it. |
| When I did inspections, if I saw something that stupid and obvious I would whip out the magnifying glass. I would pummel that buffoon with a pencil. It might also be possible to red tag an occupancy because of a direct threat to life safety. As far as chaining or barring a door, that's a big no no. Exits have to able to open without a key or special knowledge. |
| All you have to do is call the FMs office. They will take care of it. The ones I have dealt with will cite him in a heart beat. There won't be any discussion as to if he is getting a ticket. If he doesn't comply the FM will get the certificate of occupancy revoked. |

he hates making sure doors are closed before he leaves Quoted:

What's the beef with the doors being used? Â Stuff walking off? If he really needs the doors to not be used, on of those "Alarm will sound" devices should be on them. Â Most folks will honor those. |

Yes Fire Code violation, emergency egress improperly marked/covered. If it's blocked by something or chained closed a Unit has to report it, remove chains, clear blockage and wait for Inspector. Especially in a school. It was actually a question in the Lt.'s assessment interview.
ETA: Must have panic hardware installed |

if its not in original working order by means of the manufacturer it needs to be removed from service ...
i do inspections like this on the daily..  i would write and cite in a minute...   if you need the emergency light then just install a single battery back up light and remove the EXIT / NOT AN EXIT sign dont be dumb, dale |

Fire inspectors are typically easy to get on the phone and easy to talk stuff over with. Do the right thing OP and make this happen. Guy is 100% in the wrong! Quoted:

Maybe I will just put a sticky note below it saying "yes it is" and be done with it |
