Hey,

When you had to wear a necktie with your uniform, which knot did you use? Was there an approved knot or was it up to your discretion?

Clip on as soon as I got out of AIT.

I can only tie one type of tie knot, and I don't know what it is called.

I could have sworn it was 4-in-hand, but maybe that's just because Obama uses that knot when he has to wear a tie.

We were shown a half windsor in boot camp (USMC) but I always did a full windsor once I was in the fleet because that was what my did taught me and I thought it looked better. I can't remember what the regulations were on it. Probably any knot that didn't look like ass was fine.

That's what I used, but honestly I don't recall it there was any particular knot authorized.

I always used double windsor, but I don't recall anything stating that a specific knot had to be used.
Nobody in any of the units I was in ever cared what type, as long as it was done right and didn't look like ass.

What kind of uniform?

For me being in EMS it's always been a clip on until my agency got rid of them and went with turtle necks or a black t-shirt under the uniform shirt.

Otherwise, double Windsor.

Tpni.

Last I checked that is the only approved knot to use for the service and dress blue uniforms. Clip on is approved.

I tied mine at boot camp and never undid it. Got it perfect and left it.

According to AR 670-1, Section 27.19, Page 168:

c. Necktie, four-in-hand, black, service.

(1) Type. The four-in-hand necktie is a clothing bag issue item.

(2) Description. The material is polyester, wool, tropical, or a similar type of woven fabric; a knitted fabric necktie

also is authorized. The necktie will be two-fold, four-in-hand, with pointed ends. As an option, a pre-tied, snap-on necktie is authorized for wear.

(3) How worn.

(a) Personnel may wear the tie in a Windsor, half-Windsor, or four-in-hand knot. Use of a conservative tie tack or tie clasp is authorized. The necktie is tied so it is no shorter than 2 inches above the top of the belt buckle, and so it does not extend past the bottom of the belt buckle.

(b) The black four-in-hand necktie is worn with the class A uniform, and with the AG shade 415 (poly/cotton) or the AG shade 469 (poly/wool) long-sleeved and short-sleeved shirts. The necktie is required for wear when the long- sleeved shirt is worn without the class A coat, and when the long- and short-sleeved shirts are worn with the class A coat. It is optional when the short-sleeved and long-sleeved shirts are worn with the black pullover and cardigan sweaters. The necktie is worn with the Army green dress, white, and blue uniforms before retreat or on duty. Personnel may wear the four-in-hand tie with the Army blue or white uniform after retreat, when the dress code is “military informal.”

AFI 36-2903:

4.6.3. Tie and Tie Tack/Clasp. Either a blue polyester or silk, herringbone twill tie will be worn with the semi-formal dress uniform. The tip of the tie must cover a portion of the belt buckle, but cannot extend below the bottom of the belt buckle. A tie tack or clasp is optional; however, if worn the tie tack or clasp will be the “wing and star” design, Air Force symbol, or rank insignia. The tie tack or clasp will be centered between the bottom edge of the knot and bottom tip of the tie.

Exact same paragraph used for service dress, and the wear of the tie with long and short-sleeve blue shirt.

ETA:  I always use and teach the full windsor, it's a nice symmetrical knot that's easy to tie.

I always wore the 4 in hand knot.

Since getting out, I always use the half windsor.  I prefer it to the windsor because it yields an almost identical knot to the windsor but with one less turn, it doesn't use up as much of the tie's length.

It's also called the school boy knot because it's simple, but 4-in-hand is a really lame knot. Half windsor looks much better.

It was a clip on from Wal-Mart.  I used it maybe three times a year.  It lasted me 21 years.
