Wondering if anyone has or has seen Altamont grips on Colt Python. Is this gap at the bottom typical?Attached File

That's a lint trap. Catches all the dirt, dust, fuzz etc so it doesn't make its way into the action.

Colt factory combat grips are what it should wear.

I think you got the Altlmonty grips.  Next time speak clearly and ask for the Altlmont Python Grips

Thanks for the first helpful reply! Do you mean I should buy some original Colt Python grips or something else? I am not sure I want to spend $300 for original Colt Python grips and I have also heard that it is not easy to find truly authentic grips versus foreign fakes.

Thanks!

Yeah I am not too thrilled either. Do you have a Python or have you bought grips from Altamont? The reason I am a bit confused is that they made all of the wood grips for all factory Pythons when they were sent out with wood grips.

And I have done some additional reading and for whatever reason, it seems as though that gap is typical/usual...which is really baffling considering the fitting that the rest of the gun had done by factory gunsmiths.

I do have a couple Pythons but don't have those grips.

Okay thanks! Mine came with black gripper grips also. They felt great but I was going for looks with the rosewood.

IMO my aftre market grips usually have 1/16 gap that looks about 3/8 of a gap I would not accept that much of an opening.

Where the hell are you seeing Original Python grips for $300?  I got a guy bugging me to sell an original '68 set for $600, EVERY FUCKING DAY!

I had the same set that you have in your picture. I thought they fit extremely well. I remember being somewhat surprised at how well then fit. I sold them here on EE when I found a original set of grips. I thought and still think these were even more comfortable then the original grips. @Fox_Hound_MGS bought mine on EE. Maybe he will show up and have some input. I do not remember a gap like that at all, and if I did I would have put something in the ad to point it out. I find that unacceptable. Something does not seem right there, and I would email them.

That's crazy!  The factory grips suck compared to some of the aftermarket ones.  They just weren't very ergonomic.

Just be glad they are symmetrical. I bought a pair of conversion target grips for an L frame, and they look like a simpleton shaped them. One side is normal, while the other is rounder at the bottom.

They work...

Shit, I have a minty 66 Trooper with target grips.  The whole gun and box are probably worth scarcely more than $600.

Dam that looks bad.

you should order these instead.

Pythons never came new with the black rubber Colt medallion Pachymar grips.

I heard back from Altamont (on a Saturday evening enen) and they said that is normal to allow for recoil.

That's nonsense unless the Python frames vary a quarter inch over the production run.

A sixteenth of an inch is more than enough for clearance to accommodate recoil, and I'm not convinced it's necessary at all on a handgun.  Maybe if the grips are unacceptably loose.

I looked at the Nill grip link, and found some match grips for a Ruger MK II; I'm not paying $252 for pistol grips unless I can see both sides and a better view of the hand shelf.  Might be just what I want, but I want more info first.

I measured and the gap is exactly 1/8". I wish there were some pics on the net of others from the back view for comparison.
Anyway, here is a before picture with the Pachmayr grippers and 2 with the Altamonts.Attached File

There is no gap on my Trooper, there about a 1/16th inch one on my Diamondback.  Both with factory target grips.
