Want to create and post some content on YouTube.  Looking for recommendation on video camera, audio, and editing.  Apple computers, I assume the iMovie software will be fine.

Should I buy a basic video camera, or is my iPhone 6 going to be enough.  Also, curious about getting good audio quality, as a lot of YouTube audio sucks.

Any suggestions?

I think a basic camcorder in good lighting with a Lavalier or shotgun microphone serves just about anybody well.
IMovie works great for most needs.
What kind of content you gonna do?

If you want to to use your iPhone but want better audio, you could get a digital audio recorder like a Zoom H4n or Tascam DR-05.

You could record the audio at the same time you shoot the video, but you'll have to import the audio and sync it.  That's not too difficult.

With the DARs you can plug in a body mic or use a Rode Videomic and patch it in.  Easy setup if you want a shotgun mic setup.

It really depends on what you are shooting. Are you going to be at a desk/computer recording or out in the field?

In my filmmaking class I have my students use a Canon T4i/T5i/T6i along with a Rode and DAR as a simple setup.  These DSLRs shoot great video at a low pricepoint.  It also helps with stills if you intend on using still images.

Lighting may also be something you need to consider.  You could always use those five dollar aluminum scoops you can find at a hardware store or get some LED instruments. I use both with some incandescent lighting but my budget is probably bigger than what you want to spend.  You don't have to break the bank.

iMovie will be fine to start with, but you will eventually want to graduate to Final Cut probably.

I would also suggest using Celtx for your documents and script writing. You can use the Web version for free and it is a great tool.

For music, I'd use garageband to create your tunes, unless you go the creative commons route.

Setting up a YouTube channel is easy. Uploading is also a cinch.

Let me know if you have any questions. Many here can help you!

Thanks for the replies.  First thing I was going to do is some how-to videos on my 2001 Jeep TJ, as I have been rebuilding it gradually.

Flyhack72, thanks for the detailed information.  Very helpful.  I have a Nikon DSLR that shoots video, so apparently that can do a good job.  Need to look at some microphones for better sound.  For light, I was thinking a few clamp-on lights with new LED bulbs.  Also, I spent an couple hours last night watching the YouTube how-to videos on setting up a channel.

Gonna give it a try Saturday, as I'm replacing the spark plugs on the TJ.
