You can be smart or lucky.... only one!

What do you choose ?

I would prefer to be smart.

Smart for sure.
I'm not saying that I'm smart - but like a lot of smart people I know, I used my smarts to retire in my 50's.
I know way more smart retired people than I know "lucky" retired people....

Luck doesn't exist, it's a figment of the human imagination and stems from our inability to grasp how the infinite variables of reality intersect. The idea that there's some force called luck that can bend reality to someone's advantage is superstition.

So I will choose intelligence.

Luck really doesn't exist,  There is physics, there are numbers. There is no luck. Smart for the win.

I'd pick being smart enough to build a luck machine.

luck may not exist, but Murphy does.
I can damn near predict the future based on Murphy's law

That's like saying luck doesn't exist but bad luck exists.

Murphy's law is a cute way of telling people to anticipate and prepare for when something bad happens.

Always pick Lucky.

Because you can fix stupid/ignorant/unskilled with education and training.

There's no fixing unlucky... you're just cursed.

I consider myself pretty smart.  Not highly intelligent book smart, but loaded with common sense.

My boss is very lucky. He lucked into his position years ago because of timing and he played golf.  He goes with us to Vegas on work trips and brings home a minimum of $10,000 in winning each time he has gone in the past 4 or 5 years. I play the same machines and can't do shit.  He walks up to one, drops in a hundred, plays it two or three times and wins $1000+

Smart all day long.

I am the unluckiest SOB alive.

However, I found early on that if you combine smart with working like your life depends on it, suddenly you seem to get luckier and luckier.

Then I got older and realized that luck is for fools.

Exactly.

The smarter you are, and the harder you work the "luckier" you tend to be.

Consider the case of 2 people born on the same day in the same hospital. One person with severe mental and physical disabilities that plague him his entire life, the other grows up to have a superior intellect, an athlete's physique, and the face of a movie star. Neither of these situations were brought about through any action or inaction on their part. Sure, they might be attributed to actions taken by their parents, but as far as these individuals are concerned, these conditions were just thrust upon them.

What word would we use to describe a situation where 2 children can be born with such disparate conditions? Luck?  It sure seems like it fits, even if we know there isn't a scientific basis for the concept of luck. We need a word that describes (not explains, but describes) situations like this where seemingly random (or made up of unknown and uncontrollable variables) result in drastically different outcomes for seemingly similar situations.

Luck is the word we use to describe that.

.

If you are smart, it only looks like good luck.

Same thing with stupid people - most issues are rarely the result of bad luck... although they tend to blame bad luck when their plans (or lack of planning) cause problems.

I told someone I’m the luckiest SOB on the face of this planet.  They [woman] took that to mean luck is more important than hard work.  Erroneous.  The harder you work the luckier you’ll become.
