Googled couldn't find satisfactory answer- is the lower for a piston driven AR the same lower as a direct impingement lower? Same hammer, etc?

Yes in most cases.

But pistons uppers can be hell on any lower depending on factors such as bolt carrier shape and buffer weight and buffer spring size.

Which upper?  I'm a huge fan of the original Adams Arms - not as thrilled with their XLP line, harder to clean although has more gas settings and is lots lower profile.  Grabagun had some amazing deals on complete AA piston rifles - like < $600.

I've got an LWRC M6A2 upper on a Noveske Billet lower. No problems so far. Few thousand rounds through it.

Pistons are gross and will infect your lower with AIDS.

I've had a couple piston guns.

I still have one.
