Each of these guys seems like they can play ANYONE and completely subsume themselves into the role, to the point at which you forget it's Gary Oldman or Daniel Day-Lewis and just think "he's actually that character." Each of these guys can play characters who are wildly different, and play them well. Which has the greater ability to play EVERYOOONNNNNNEEEEE?

I'll never understand the DDL worship. I think he's good, but the mythology around him is ridiculous. With Oldman, it seems the more normal the character, the less interesting his performance. He's like Depp that way.
I thinks day Lewis has larger "range" but I probably like Oldman better. Both are very good.
IMHO, the worse role I have ever seen Gary Oldman play was Dr. Smith in that retarded Lost In Space remake.
i never understood Arf obsession with Oldman,,,he's alright but nothing to write home about.

Admiral Bishop Senate Speech Starring Gary Oldman
Even after all this time he can still play the part. Voice and motion capture but still manages to sell it. |
Lewis.....He killed it in Gangs of New York.
Gangs of New York | Bill the Butchers First Scene | Gang Showdown |
Where is Jack Elam on this list? From a really nasty bad guy to a lonely astronaut to an old codger he beat this list easy.
When I first read this I thought you were referring to the killing distance of some obscure cartridges.
In that case I think the Oldman has greater range but the Lewis is more accurate at 500 yards. |
Lewis. He can make things that would seem like affectations in 95% of other actors seem normal in his role. Crazier than a shithouse rat, too, which is something that the few actual artists out there often seem to have in common.

Isnt DDL's Character Bill almost the same as the oilman in "blood? DiCaprio seems more versatile, though a sniveling liberal shit.

Oldman is one of the all time great chameleons.
Lewis is a ham with flashes of greatness. Lewis reminds me of Tom Hanks. He's always obviously Tom Hanks. Good actor, but it's always obviously him, no matter how he tweaks his accent or what mustache he has. On the other hand, I'm STILL finding movies with Gary Oldman that I've seen before yet never knew he was in them. He's amazing. Oldman by a VERY long shot. |
Oldman has no qualms with just showing up in a shit movie playing Gary Oldman (59 movies since 1982).
Can't say the same for Lewis (19 movies since 1982). |
DDL went from My Left Foot to Gangs of New York, Last of the Mohicans and There Will Be Blood. Hero, Anti-Hero, Hero, Anti-Hero.
Daniel Day Lewis can not do comedy. Oldman has done it all. |
Gary Oldman, although Lewis was stellar in gangs of New York and There Will Be Blood.
Edit: although that speaks nothing to his range as they're basically the same character. |
I don't remember seeing these guys in a romantic story, drama or comedy.
These guys are pretty versatile. Cumberbatch Malkovich |
The ONLY movie Lewis was good in was In The Name of the Father.

Oldman.
It is kinda interesting that he never takes on lead character roles. He should have some oscars. |

disagree re Oldman. His talent is that he never plays himself. He plays every character differently, so differently that you forget it's Gary Oldman. Compare to Will Smith, who has made a career out of playing -- Will Smith! Or DDL, who can portray crazy versions of himself and that's about it. I like Lewis, but Oldman is one of my favorites. Oldman can do anything, including comedy. Watch Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead. It's an older, lesser known movie but Oldman and Tim Roth are great. Roth is no slouch either.

I'm not sure if DDL has done comedy. While his dramatic characters are very good the question was range.
GO has successfully done a wider range of characters |
I like Oldman but I prefer actual acting to just yelling lines.
I think Geoffrey Rush is better than both. |
