I was given a .22 that the previous owner had had a squib in (he was firing shells he found on the ground at the range), and then he fired another round down it and really mucked stuff up. now this was not insurmountable except of course the bulge, but this friend decided to fix it himself. he first broke off an aluminum cleaning rod at the muzzle end, that I got out with mercury, the bullets as well.

My trouble is the numerous nails he pounded in from the breech area to try and clear the bullets. Does anyone have an idea how to get them out? they of course bound up so I am not entirely sure what to do

First, we need pictures. It not possible, then make/model of pistol.

Use the barrel to beat the last owner, that's about all it's any good for now.

Get a piece of steel rod, pound the nails out, then have the barrel bored and lined if you want to shoot the gun.

Now you'll probably tell us it's a 10/22.

ETA: I imagine that the rod wasn't bound on the barrel so much as the bullets and that when the bullets were gone, the rod came out. OP will surely deliver.

1). Grip the pistol by the grip.
2). Use the pistol to slap the silly out of your friend.
3). Continue to slap the silly out of your friend.
4). When your slapping arm gets tired, switch arms.

Seriously, WTF? I want to see pictures of this.

The rifle is a 715T. so not a pricey firearm but niftily enough it is not on any kind of registry so....  not a bad thing to have

the barrel is out of the receiver, it was just two pins so that wasn't bad. I will find a steel rod close to bore diameter and try the press I guess.

I just cant figure out why he did what he did

Is this a Mossberg 715T?  Have you called Mossberg about a replacement barrel?
