I got in a discussion with a friend about this and couldn't find any solid info online other then something about the Marines or Army loading their own ammo at Qantico or something. No one really knew for sure and it seemed like speculation.
Does anyone know if any units, or specialty MOS handload ammo? I obviously do not mean the bulk ammo but for long range shooting or anything? Thank you |

AMU does The Marines used to handload for their snipers but I do not know if that is still the case. Now this one feller gave me the low down on Marine sniper teams and their ammunition. Those boys get to their hide, check things over, then bring out the loading tools to assemble custom loads for the job at hand, accounting for environment, the specific rifle and its scope, and even the name of the bad guy. Ain't no half assing in the Marine snipers, they are not only riflemen, they are rifle men. |

The USMC does actually build its own precision weapons and hand load ammo for the competition (high level). And most likely for snipers.
There is a program for a generic armorer to become a precision weapons builder (I forget the correct title). MOS is 2112. The program for hand loading is only for the ammo techs as a lateral move with reenlistment. They are in Quantico. You will probably never meet any of these guys. |

The Rifle team loads its own ammo..THATS IT... Over the years I have PERSONALLY watched the Marine ammo techs at Camp Perry handload ammunition. This last summer I saw they were pulling the bullets out of Black Hills and reseating them to achieve a specific bullet jump for a specific rifle. Years ago they really loaded a shitload of stuff. The BIG secret was what they were using for a 600 yard load. I once got the secret for the 7.62 600 yard load. When they changed over to the AR platform many moons ago I tried to con the recipe out of them to no avail. I got the Commandant's private phone, how to make a nuclear reactor out of old wristwatches, how to disarm dud 155 rounds, the best way to steal a Humvee, where they keep the top secret information regarding the nuclear football along with the activation codes and to top it off, they taught me the Secret Handshake! I never came even close to getting the 600 yard recipe that year. I understand that they handload for sniper rifles but maybe they don't do this anymore as it actually is pretty labor intensive. |

The US Army Marksmanship Unit has a first class loading shop. The Army Reserve Team loads their ammo there, too.
The National Guard Team has a facility at the National Guard Marksmanship Training Center. Precision Weapons Battalion has their own facility as well. Army Reserve Team at Benning |
