Let me start by saying I have no idea of what I am doing. I still use a flip phone that only does phone calls (voice) and voice mail. I have a wifi system in my house thanks to the cable system I use. I do everything on my desktop computer. Since I have wifi now I thought a tablet would be nice to use in the bedroom to listen to KRLD out of Dallas in the middle of the night. It comes in poorly on my AM radio now. It might be fun to surf the net from the bedroom also. What tablet should I get? I don't want to spend a whole lot of money but it seems like a fun thing to do. Thanks for your help. John

Refurbished iPad is the answer you seek.

Try a wifi-only tablet, maybe an Android one as they will be much cheaper than an iPad.  But do not get the cheapest.

Go to Beat Buy and handle several different sizes to see size which you prefer.

ETA here is a good one 8-inch tablet. I use a 9.7 inch tablet and it is just a bit too large to be handy.  8 inch might be better.

I'm using a 10" Insignia (Best Buy house brand)
Almost 5 years old. Android operating system.
Starting to get a few bugs, but has seen daily use, and cost less than $200.

I used an Apple Air 2 WiFi only for about a year. Ended going back to a laptop. If I'm going to use something with an almost 10" screen then stepping up to a laptop is easy. Keyboard, touchscreen, more powerful software and hardware. Eventually you'll want more out of it so why not a laptop.

Kindle Fire 7 or 8 is the answer you seek. Make sure it has a slot for an expanded memory card up to at least 64 gb. Android all the way. Mine is 4 years old and sees average 6 days a week of usage. Really like being able to download various map blocks so I can use it as a navigation tool when ot in the woods WITHOUT having to be in cell or wi-fi range.

Any Android or Apple tablet will be fine. From $69- 1299, your options are wide open.

iPad mini is nice, but expensive.
Any Android-based tablet should do. I have a Dell. It's old but still works. My wife has an Amazon Fire. It also has been working for a long time without issues.
The only problem is when you run out of memory. So, you can either delete data and/or apps, or get a tablet with more memory.

I like my air 2. My wife has a mini. I wanted a bigger screen, and it is better for couch surfing than her mini to me.

Have an iPad but have been sitting in my lazy boy  using and old Fire HDX 7 kindle.  My 3rd gen iPad is getting long in the tooth. For what I use a tablet for I will probably get a kindle fire 8 hd and call it good.

I bought the original Ipad when it first came out.  I gave it to my Grandson when Apple stopped updating the software.  It still charges and works great for surfing and email, but no new stuff for years now.  What a waist because the pad itself is going strong.

I have an Ipad air II now, and it does all the new stuff, but doesn't seem as solid as my first Ipad.  It's a bit buggy, and the updates are continual.  It was also expensive.

Now back in October I bought my father an Amazon Kindle Fire HD 8.   It was on sale for under $100 and you could even do payments.  My Dad still hasn't grasped how to use it very well yet, but I was with him for a week and used it then and I really liked it.  Especially for the money.  And you can update the memory with SD Cards.  If I didn't already have the IPad, I'd be buying another one of those for sure.
