Wanting to get some land soon and thinking about going the steel building route for the house. I think it would be easier to incorporate a good size shop into the home construction this way and keep costs down.
For reference, the following link has a gallery of what I'm thinking about. Mueller, Inc Does anyone have any experience regarding this style of construction for home use? Cost, concerns or anything I should know? |

There's a local outfit that makes and sells these. When they say they are engineered, that's a pretty liberal term.
they only engineer everything above the concrete. In most cases you're going to have to find a local engineer (which is why I have seen these) so engineer the foundation and hold-downs. They will tell you the diameter of the anchor bolts, but not even the length into concrete. Nothing. So if your local city/county is going to require it to be engineered just plan on another few hundred bucks for that. Also, they are pretty easy to put up and have a lot of flexibility, I like them quite a bit but can build a wood-framed shop faster and cheaper so it doesn't make sense to me. |

I have a 1500 sq ft Mueller building for my garage shop, they are a great company, sat down with a rep, and told him what I wanted, in put in the computer and had the estimate, took about 4 weeks for delivery, about 10 of us put up the skeleton, and my son and I did the insulation and metal panels a couple at a time after work
