I'm in New England and need a new all purpose winter jacket. I have the North Face that everyone and their mother has and it gets me through fine. Thinking of something water proof though that's not to heavy. I prefer Amazon Prime just in case it doesn't fit its easy to return and re-order.

If it's for winter wear you don't need waterproof. Cold weather means frozen rain. Any good quality goose down jacket or coat will keep you warmer than anything else in cold weather. You can spend a lot, Arcteryx, North Face, or spend less. Don't go cheap, cheap stuff is cheaply made with all the downsides of cheap stuff. If you want something to double for rain and snow any good thinsulate garment with gore-tex is a good choice. same rules apply for cheap stuff. Bargains can be had on good quality garments, you just have to research brands and prices to recognize a deal when you see one.

Get the mountain hardware ghost.  I have one and love it. Kind of pricey but worth it.

I own or have owned a lot of nice winter coats. Down, shelled fleece, wool, etc. Some expensive stuff from REI, Carfarts and others.

The single best/warmest thing I've ever owned is a Faded Glory fleece zip up hoodie I got off a clearance rack at Walmart two years ago. Never seen fleece like it before. Seems I paid $14.  Alabama is not New England, but if it gets down in the 20's, that cheap hoodie, covered in another fleece REI vest, my wool surplus mittens and a wool knit watch cap and I'm toasty outside.

LOL!  My Mother in Law worked at Walmart for years.  I have two of those Faded Glory fleece zip up hoodies.  One is hanging in the closet and ones stays in my truck. She probably paid $10.00 or less for them since she worked at Walmart.

I have to agree they are very warm and I also have never seen  that kind of fleece in any other jacket.  I have all kinds of coats/jackets also and some high dollar Barbour, Filson, and many others.

No, I would not recommend one alone for a NE winter but with a good thermal undershirt  worn underneath one of those cheap hoodies and a nice wind blocking  rain jacket over it, you could get into the 20 to 30 degree temps and be just fine.

Eddie Bauer 40% off now. Men's superior down parka is awesome as are several other "parka" and "jacket" items they make. I'm impressed with their quality and price and warranty.  Mountain Hardware,  and Marmot and LL Bean also good stuff.  Arcyterx is for skinny peeps with bucks that want the best.

I think Backcountry has a deal now where if you spend $50 it's a free return on them. You could also watch Steep and Cheap for while; men's jackets are bound to pop up. I also like Geartrade; that's where Backcountry unloads it's returns (for sizing issues, etc). First it's an item on Backcountry, then it's a sale item, then if they have a few of them it goes to Steep and Cheap, then it ends up on Geartrade. Now anyone can sell on Geartrade but it's predominantly Backcountry.

That's pretty open ended.
Do you want a hooded jacket?
Do you want a jacket that goes below the waist or jacket that ends at the waist?
Do you want solid color, pattern or camo?
Down, fleece, artificial down?
Do you want something you can ski in or you want it to be a casual work jacket or something for a serious operator?

ECWS Goretex parka like the military uses.
You can get them in solid colors as well as camo.

Get oversized and loose fleece garment for underneath.

Back in the 80s guys wore these to the field and many didn't even wear the fleece undergarment.  Just tshirt and uniform shirt  under the ECWS parka in Germany or Ft Riley in the middle of winter.  Add med weight polypro if need more and wooly bear heavyweight fleece if it was 0-20 below.

As a past sled dog driver for 20 years I can tell you this.
There is a huge difference between "urban stylish" warm and actual out in the cold as shit warm.

Urban warm is a compromise of warm and not looking like a eskimo.
Wilderness "warm" you better damn well look like an eskimo.

Warm clothing is not "stylish" It is big and holds a bunch of warm air around your body.
You can go light but you have to layer with light fabrics.

Most people want to stay warm and look good.

I've always told my students that warm is ugly.

Make your compromise.

They rate the jacket in three ranges, warm, warmer and warmest and this is "warmest"  It can be layered with other hoodie's or sweatshirts.  I'd wait until the 30's to low 40's before I use this jacket.

Eddie Bauer BC Downlight Stormdown

This one  meets you requirements for water resistance and being not too heavy. I have one myself. You can get it on Amazon but I do not know if they will match the 40% off code on the Eddie Bauer site. Also, sometimes these are cheaper in store than online in case you are near a store.

In my humble opinion....if money is a concern, try Free Country Apparel. To be quite honest my mom got me my first coat of theirs from WallyWorld back when I was in HS (90s) and it lasted me years. I've since gone back and bought new ones as needed.

We always go to TJ Max looking for cool deals. They had NorthFace and Marmot jackets $50-$100 off the original price.
Might be worth a look if you have one nearby.

If it's really winter then you definitely don't want to be out in sub 40 degree weather and rain. It's more than common sense, it's exactly what does kill people every year. If you have to be out in rain in those conditions then an expedition level Gore tex coat at least mid thigh length minimum with Cobra hood and sleeves long enough to hide your gloved hands inside are needed.

If it's below freezing, then snow or ice is the issue. At that point a N3B type Parke with heavily insulated hood and fur ruff is the ticket. They are still issue and the makers offer them in various colors etc for civilian use. Keep in mind the body of the coat isn't as heavily insulated as some would think - they are intended to be worn with matching bibs that add to the amount of insulation the torso gets.

I have used the issue ECWCS Goretex parka and in Gen One style with the Cobra hood they are great rain and wind shedders - the first few years. After 5 years, tho, it gets chancy and they all start leaking regardless of reputation or assertions of quality. And NO, the are NOT "good enough" for field use in sub 40 degree weather with no additional insulation as Ft Dix reminded me during my mobilization. It also defeated my old Goretex parka and showed me no matter how comfortable and broken in like jeans it was in cool windy weather, it was junk in a downpour. I've had the N3B in some hard rain and it seems to do rather well for the short duration, tho.

What Goretex does is simulate well proofed leather, and what fleece does is simulate wool - so keep in mind you could consider a leather and wool combo that would also take on the weather. Those are still in use in Germany - among the older generations who haven't succumbed to the siren song of modern marketing or technology. Same in Canada, too, where a good wool duffle coat is still available. In the US, tho, it's all about consumer grade mountaineering goods or canvas work wear, which are either expensive or limited in performance, and frequently both. We have strayed from the basics that worked well in the past. What I would give for a good wool Loden coat. Nobody makes them any more.

This. And when it gets below zero add a walls hoody under it and wear a sweat shirt under that. I have been on the 7th floor roof in sub zero windy and snowy conditions p.m.'ing roof top fans numerous cold winter nights and have been just fine in that set up. Add some good gloves and winter hat and you are fine, short of living out in it or scaling Mt. Everest. If you plan on those things, sure get that other really expensive stuff.

Carhartt here as well. It gets pretty chilly up here and the Carhartt always keeps me warm.
Not as "cool looking" as some but I'm old and don't care.
