I was 26 now 35.
I was faced with several medical waivers and scored low on the asvab. One Waiver was for being hypothyroid and not overweight. Two was the hernia surgery at 16. Three was for Raynauds Phenomenon. It's a vascular thing NOT related to stress but according to the enlistment standards, It was not waiverable and claimed to be caused by stress. It's not for everyone but the moment you step in a recruiters office you better be 100% on board. Don't waste their time. |

Military is what you make of it. Most of basic is BS games. Sucks harder the older you are but is still not that bad. You have committed to nothing at this point so do not take anything less than what you want in terms of MOS. Recruiters vary heavily between lying POS and stand up guys. They do need to fill numbers and some will have you sign open contracts and tell you if you want infantry after basic "sure kid you got it", yeah not so much. You will end up a water purification specialist some other god forsaken MOS. Also NO Cav. Scout is not the same as a Ranger and you will not get Airborne School automatically.
Know what you are signing up for and get it in writing or it ain't happening. Do not accept an open contract and if you think your recruiter is fucking you over, they prob. are. Tell them to pound sand and walk out and go to another recruiting office somewhere else. |

I know I'm not sworn in or anything and I know there's a chance I won't be able to join but I have this really good feeling but also this buyers remorse type feeling. I have been looking at the marine corps but I'm not sure after talking to this army recruiter.

just suck it up and get er done. its an invaluable thing ESPECIALLY if you are just kind of floating around in life... even if you know what you want to do you could always join and do that job inside or do it for them to pay your college etc.
oh and if they still have enlistment bonuses and want to do college... get the post 9/11 gi bill kicker... I got an extra $650 a month for 48 months when I went to college,,, each month on top of paying my college then gave me like $2250 a month! |

If you really want to go in the service, I would suggest Air Force. I know there is much hate here but you will find that the AF is a faaaar better place to serve, with outstanding food and a lot better treatment. Most of the military occupations are technical but if you want combat arms stuff you could try for the Security Forces (formerly Air Police/Security Police) where its much more like infantry but without having to sleep in your own filth in the dirt and weeds for weeks on end. Also the women are way hotter.
