What use do you have for it? Because 'Merica I love me some Merica, but I'm still at the stage where I need to have a legit use for a new caliber. I can relate to that. I'm all for owning whatever caliber, but personally I prefer a need -- sort of a desire to test the waters before plunging in. Good topic OP, been thinking about a 458 socom myself... |

I don't have one, but I want one. Why? Because I can, & they kick like a damn mule. They aren't bad if set up right. That being said, I didn't initially set mine up right A few mags and a giant red/black/blue/purple shoulder later I reconfigured it...lol. Ace stock with the 1" pad on it was much better |

Marty was the originator of this round. Here you may learn a bit: http://www.teppojutsu.com/458.htm
This guy Tony has been in the .458 game a long time too: http://www.tromix.com/458-socom-parts-1.html |
| My recently put together tromix 10.5 barreled pistol is fun as hell. I have a phase 5 buffer on it. It doesn't get uncomfortable to shoot until 15-20 rounds in. I don't ever shoot it that much in the field, so no biggie to me. If the pigs stick around for 20 shots, I will be shocked! Reloading for it is easy, but brass is expensive. Everyone who shot it on Thanksgiving had a big smile on thier faces. |

Unmodified GI mags. you have to modify Pmags to work. |

I have a Wilson upper on an Aero lower with an SSA-E and Leupold VX-1 shogun scope.
It's nice, but I honestly prefer 45-70. Follow up shots are easier put on target, even with the .458 polycase. It's not getting sold, I just prefer the 45-70. If you do it, mine personally likes GI mags over PMAGS. PMAGS feed some rounds, GI feeds all. |

I have one. It's everthing people say it is. Recoil is noticeable, but not really bad. I've read where it's described as recoiling about like a 20 guage shotgun.
The main problem is sizing the brass. Cartridge cases must be full length sized before using. You'll have cases stick in the chamber if you don't. The brass is tough and hard to resize. Use lots of lube on cases and expect an occasional stuck case. Have a "stuck case remover" on hand before starting. None of the above will be a problem if you don't reload. ETA: Use a brush to lubricate the inside neck of the cartridge case. You'll have deformed cases if you don't. Did I mention sizing the brass is a pain. |

You can send expended brass to be reloaded. I'm still working through my initial purchase (I jump in deep) but I remember a company will give you a discount if you send in your one fired brass. Forget the details, sorry. Like I said, I shoot my 45-70 more, but it's a great program. |

Quoted: I don't know how it could be. It's much too slow. Should make a great brush gun though because 450 grains doesn't give a fuck about a leaf or stick between you and the target. It would be worth it to reload yourself. One co was giving $2/lb for the brass. That works out to less than .07 per case. I think it takes 30 to make a lb.
It is not hard to reload. Imperial sizing wax has stopped the stuck cases and makes resizing really easy. The brass lasts for a very long time. Some have 12loads and still going strong. It is such a low pressure round it does not stretch or stress the brass at all. You will loose them before you wear them out. I can load for as cheap as 30 cents per round using 405gn hardcast I got in a group buy. It might go up a bit when I have to buy new but that 1k will last a very long time. It is not one that you go to the range and run 500 rounds downrange. 20-40 is plenty. But what a blast when you do. I have fired 200 rounds doing load workups. I was sore for a few days after that one. If you have not yet done so get onto the 458socom forum. Lots of good info. Just follow the instructions in the how to get signed up thread. |

I've heard it's legal if stamped specially for the cartridge. I'm not in CA, just passing on heresy. |

Tromix is making a follower and mag bases that should make them legal in Ca. There is also someone on the 458socom forum who is selling marked mags for the socom. |
